Just purchased a 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport. Wife suggested we look into getting a camper of some sort. Anyone have advice or experience to share about what the TRD can tow?

well the manual states 6500lbs or something along those lines, but you also need to factor in the tongue weight of the trailer/etc. Personally I would not to more then 4000lbs with the tacoma and a brake controller, for longer distances. I might push it to 5000-5500 on short hauls. After that you should seriously consider getting into a larger truck in my opinion

Does your truck have the tow package? What kind of trailer are you looking to get?

Things you will need for a real trailer are Trailer Brake Controller, Airbags or Sumosprings, and a Weight Distribution and Sway Control set up

I have a 2016 Sport with the tow package which rates it at 6400lbs towing, but there's a lot more figuring that you have to consider like gear, passengers, etc. My camper I also bought last year weighs 3700lbs dry and honestly I wouldn't go any heavier than that. I actually wish I bought less of a camper for the long hauls out west and climbing mountains. The Tacoma is a champ though and does fine, just a little white knuckle at times such as fighting strong headwinds and high revs to keep it moving.

Go to RVtowcheck.com and put your figures in, click calculate, and look at the TW suggestions. My Sport figures are:
    GCWR: 11360
    GVWR: 5600
GVW (curb weight): 4425 (I took my Tacoma to a truck scale two weeks ago and weighed it. With all my stuff in it that never leaves the truck it weighed 4540lbs)
    TWR: 6400
