Noice. And rain on the windscreen, no dust and probably no fires either.

Definitely less dusty this time! And there were no currently active fires so the views were AMAZING!!! Can't believe what all we missed last time...

Last summer took a toll on the area though. Do you remember where we camped the first night? Nice, big green trees? Yeah, no more :( Fire took it out last summer. And the area just before/after that too. And where the lady in the van nearly drove off the edge to let us pass...gone, burned. And the area between paradise and the MT end...all burned. Paradise and the whole area along that road is still OK.
I wasn't sure I was going to get to go this summer - we've had a ton of rain lately and since the fires burned everything up there's nothing holding the ground down. About 3 miles of road got washed out a week and a half ago but the FS crews worked their butts off to get the road open for bear hunting season. The FS calls it a "washout", I call it a land slide! Tons of dirt and debris washed onto the road and clogged up the creek. What a mess... I took some pics, will have to post later.

Haven't had a lot of time to go through pics...driven 1500 miles over the last two weekends :goingcrazy:
    Here's a couple quickies...
this was our first camp on the trail. the area just before was burned at the time and this used to be green but it all got burned (and re-burned) last summer :(
    _MG_4942_zps0409be32_a7c385ce8f57830ebb9e0bcb33de29f574bf2364.jpg
and the view from observation point...this was where (i think) monte was practicing his bugling. I think the smoke obliterated half of the view originally

i ended up camping across the road, there is a little primitive campground there - and the trees were still green!! cold as all hell though...brr...

Yeah... :( id much rather have green trees. But the views in the distance that we missed out on because of smoke were amazing. Mountains for miles and miles...
I've got to get through the pics of the mudslides on the mt end. What a mess!

Great photographs Lisa. Post more when you can. We wanted to go back there this year but couldn't make it work.

I think you're right. Pretty this is the bugle spot.

A little update to this thread for those who are interested:

I just got back from traveling through the Magruder Corridor and the Lolo Motorway, and had a fantastic time on both roads. As was mentioned, the Magruder area burned in 2014 and 2015, so the forest is just starting to grow back and a lot of the drive is through burned areas. It does make for some cool looking landscape though. The road is in great condition due to repairs earlier this year, and the road up to Paradise was closed for construction until the day before we got on it, so we were pretty lucky to be one of the first ones back up in there. I overestimated how long it would take to travel the Corridor, mostly due to the road condition, and I was unaware that the portion over Nez Perce Pass at the Montana border is paved, so it's pretty quick going after you get near that point.

The Lolo Motorway is much more rocky and trail-like, and is worth doing in shorter sections. It has been a while since that area burned, so it is much more wooded and the views aren't quite as zombie apocalypse-ish. This is the view from on top of the Devil's Chair, at roughly the mid point of the trail:

    IMG_2548.jpg

It wasn't smoky at all, despite the nearby fire in Lolo, MT and a couple smaller ones south of Hwy 12 in Idaho. I highly recommend either one or both to people traveling through that area, and I'm sure I'll want to go back in a couple years to see how it's changed.

Absolutely, Idaho has so many fantastic (and remote) places. Despite how rough parts of Lolo were, we saw full size rigs with toy haulers, etc. at some of the campgrounds. And Magruder was in good enough shape that we saw a Prius at Indian Creek, at the beginning of the road up to Paradise. I could have done without that.

Nice Dan. Even tho it's not technically hard, Magruder is still worthy. Did you make it up to the lookout? I recall that spur being the most challenging of the entire loop. No prius' up there.

I really liked the peacefulness of Paradise. I need to get back there again.

A rough Lolo sounds like fun. It would be a shame to see that place burn up.

You might even say, Lolo separates the women from the men.

I definitely have a lot more exploring to do in Idaho - I know where some of the better known trails are, but you Idahoans are awfully tight-lipped about the backcountry gems (not that I can blame you).

We made it up to Green Mountain Lookout, for a wonderful view of the wilderness fires in the distance :p

    IMG_249314.jpg

The maybe-18-year-old Forest Service firefighters that were posted up there grunted at us and continued to surf the web with the perfect 4G service at the top of the tower.

I am heading up to the Magruder this weekend and was just checking out a few things when I ran across this in a google image search...

thought, "I'm pretty sure that's Mike's truck on the Lolo."
so I clicked the link and it brought me here

go through the slidewhow of images. Mike is the 2nd pic and my Taco is the 10th pic (taken by Ben? Monte?)
Not sure who the Phil Knight dude is but I think its both funny and creepy that he chose our pictures for his article. No photo credit given of course...wonder what else he's stolen...

I checked around the site after finding that, thought maybe I'd recognize something else. Checked out a few articles that I thought maybe might pertain to our realm but didn't find anything else I recognized.
I did note that NONE of the photos are credited on that site...kinda fishy...

I will be in Western Montana in August with my wife and son. I really want to do Lolo Motorway but my wife does not "camp." Do I have any options? Either the whole trail in one day or is it possible to just do part of it?
