Do I have to split apart the caliper to put new seals in? This is a front caliper. If so does the split have to be sealed with anything? Thanks

No, but compressed air is helpful to remove the pistons. Just pull the boots off and then shoot compressed air into the hard line port and the pistons should come out enough to remove. Then clean them up and install new boots on them.

ok thanks. Also what brake fluid is needed for the bleeding process? It will be mixing with the factory fluid. Thanks

You should flush the factory stuff out of got a lot of miles and just put in DOT 3 or 4. I'm assuming it's not the original factory fluid as hopefully it's been flushed at least once.

I split the two halves when I did mine - the seal kit includes a square cut o-ring that seals between them. Lube all your rubber seals with the silicone grease included in the kit, and use a large c-clamp to push the pistons in squarely. Flush and bleed with fresh DOT3.

That's what I did on my Tundra. Factory stuff was a super dark green and now I have nice clear fluid.

Thanks, what is the reason for splitting, just to clean the piston bores easier? I don't need any synthetic fluid only DOT 3? thank you

The inside of your cylinders (behind the pistons) shouldnt be "dirty", wipe them out. You split the halfs to replace the o-ring that seal the port between the two for the fluid to transfer from one to the other. You can but also don't have to. Im currently rebuilding some 14WA 4Runner calipers for my truck. Im going to split them, might as well

Yes, I split mine to be able to clean the bores easier - on mine each caliper had one seized piston - so cleaning the scale / corrosion from the bore on the outside of the seal groove was much easier with the caliper split. I replaced those pistons as well, since an air hammer was involved in removing them from the caliper housings. :)

My inner pads (both driver and passenger) are wearing much faster than the outer pads. Would this suggest needing a rebuild/descale?

Yes, most likely you have at least one inner piston seized on each side.

Got my brakes done.. Pissed a lot of fluid out the passenger side and think there's still some air in the system.
This can of brake fluid has 2x as much as the normal looking can, at least by weight, and was $1 more (2/$6) than the normal (2/$5).

I'm not sure what was up but the outside pads are far less worn than the inside pads..
Driver side (the one pad is darker because I used it as a spacer, probably covered in brake fluid):

    Passenger side:

None of the pistons were fully seized, but there were a couple that took some effort (push back in and more air multiple times).

I hope you mistyped and meant brake cleaner. If you put that can in as brake fluid you are going to have a problem
