Off roading trails in Virginia

Anyone in va know of some good trails to hit?

 

Yeah I know of a few that I've experienced.trying to find some one to go with if your interested

 

I might be interested in a day trip if the trails aren't too difficult. My truck really isn't set up for hard core off-roading. Maybe the Advanced Bunny Trail, but not much more.

 

I got a few around my way that you could go though with a stock truck

Peter's mill's not bad. pretty tame. it's early in the season so you may want to bring a pair of loppers and a bowsaw to trim some of the branches, especially the tall overhnging ones. I've had some pretty thick branches hang in my way when I've been there in March/April in the past.

Flagpole knob is also pretty nice, not too far from harrisonburg va

There's plenty of trails that are easy in the jefferson/washington forests. Long run road (FR 72) out there is pretty nice. Again, bring loppers and bowsaw if you care about pinstriping.
most forest service roads or roads starting out with "FR" are pretty nice and tame up that way.
most of these roads are on google maps. I use the thing on googlemaps that lets you download a section of the map to your phone so I have it to look at while I'm out there since there's no signals.

allof the trails above have youtube vidoes of people going across them so you have an idea of what they are like, if you are looking for simple trails.


I want to say back creek mountain road either is dirt or leads to dirt but that was a long time ago that we went that way in the national forest.

Stock taco has been fine.

just read this one a few weeks back, and it looked interesting for when we head for our yearly trip down that way.

 

I forgot I had this. it's a BIG file but it's been helpful for us when we are down there.

If you are familiar with the area, you may be fine just using this map. we've been going down that way for about 15 years now but we don't live there. so, since we aren't as familiar with the area, we have to compare the forest service map to google map, come up with an itinerary before we head out.

It's been helpful for finding a bunch of trails.

But this list on this guide does not seem all inclusive. i've clicked on a few forests I've been to with some pretty good trails in Pisgah, Nantahala, Uwarrie, and Washington/Jefferson forests that are all open roads and they don't all show up. but it highlights a lot in Wash/Jeff in VA/WV.

 

I wanna hit a trail Saturday.its between checking out second mtn trail or rocky run and found out another one joins into there.any one down to go to check it out??

 

I just did Bald Mtn. in my bone stock 17 OR (even original tires). A few bangs on the factory running boards, no biggie. I dont think i would attempt anything more difficult than that trail with a stock taco. Mostly because you dont know if youre gonna smash your oil pan in those bigger mudholes, but its water so you dont want to go too slow.

I would do it again. Have a picnic at one of the wider spots on the trail or one of the overlooks.

 

How do you get there, exactly?

 

I used the All Trails destination point. Its like a super mild gravel road until you get to the corner where it heads south

Bald mtn is ok if you don't mind a tight trail with lots of pin stripes

 

it wasnt terrible, I still gotta wash it but i dont think anything scratched beyond the dust on top.

 

Would it be better in the fall when the vegetation dies down?

 

Id say no, heres my thoughts. during the summer stuffs got leaves and softer than twigs needles which mostly just brush over your paint. Most of the scrapes are from the twigs and harder sticks. If youre worried too much about your paint, i wouldnt do it. Obviously my Taco is white so it wont show a scrape unless you look really really hard.
