50-60% throttle on my truck makes engine load climb to 80 or 85%. WOT equals 92% and the truck just growls rather than accelerate any faster.

OK, I'll forego the header for now and spend my money elsewhere. Thanks.

First "hot" day here, which encouraged rolled up windows and A/C on, on the secondary suburban route with more than a few traffic lights... and seemingly catching each one at the head of the red.

No air conditioning .. my truck is geared tall, but acceptable with current up-sized tire at 29.3" ... I wasn't planning on going larger until regearing was an affordable/worthwhile proposition.

With the A/C on.. ? There goes a significant amount of power that the motor is working with off-idle.. combined with the tall gearing. Embarrassing, and potentially unsafe. A re-gear is looking more and more like a need, rather than a want.

I agree that it is necessary. Taller tires is effectively the same as a (negative) regear. These trucks are geared for economy from the factory already anyway.

    Hack --

Can you explain in greater detail the effect that the AC has on the motor's power and how that correlates to the need for a regear. Potentially unsafe??? Just not following.

    Thanks.

    https://www.yourmechanic.com/article/how-much-power-does-the-ac-draw-from-the-engine

Simply put, the engine is putting out less power to the rear end, due to it being robbed at the air compressor first. I most definitely noted that the engine simply wanted to cough against combined strain of load, and inefficient gearing. Solution with no AC on.. keep the revs up.. on AC, if it just wants to cough instead of generating power to the rear end, revs aren't going up.

Mine is the 5 speed manual with 3.31 gearing.

    It's hard to explain, clearly.

The article helps a lot. Thanks.

Seems like you'd be affected more than most 4 cyl. Tacoma owners due to the mods you made. For instance, that bumper/skid plate must take a lot of extra muscle to haul around.

His front bumper, steps, skids, and roof rack. Also adding wind resistance to a undergeared truck. I can only imagine what you're going through.

I slowly noticed my truck struggling more and more after the tiregate and Rock Sliders, rolling on 33s. Thankfully I have my 4.56 gear on order:D

Accessory drive equipment such as AC, Power Steering Pump, radiator cooling fan and Alternator consume power. Some consume up to 20 horsepower and as it is the engine usually only makes 105-110 horsepower to the rear wheels. So their is a significant loss of power when uprising tires nearly 13%.

So the 3rd showed up today and just want to ask for some opinions. ECGS recommends 85w140 non syn. so thats what I want to use.
Where should I buy the oil?
Do I have to add a LSD additive? asking because I saw this in a how to video.
Thanks for any responses and I am sure I will have a few morw questions as I ponder this.
    edit;
I found the oil so than next question. How much does the rear end take?

    Apparently, "Just enough" :)
    • Replace the differential drain plug, unless the replacement differential already has a plug installed. Refill the differential fluid with gear oil until it just reaches the bottom lip of the fill hole.

Speaking of the inevitable regear. Finalized the order of a salvage 3rd member from a 2014 SR5 4.10 today.. Ironically the call came in (bluetooth hands-free, relax..) as i was growling down the highway doing a buck-20, and the wee beastie running out of steam. Time to match up the revs again. Should be inbound from the east coast of Canada, next week.

Now, to Detroit True-trac or not to?

Nice bike indeed. I had to give up solo riding due to failed hips a number of years back.. I was riding a sidecar rig, up until the point i got the Tacoma.

Going on 7 years of it sitting in the back of the garage, got to get back to it as a project again once i'm finished with this danged truck.

Yes. It's different. Now you know where i get my odd styling cues and tastes with the truck.
