So I have an 03 PreRunner Dbl cab with the factory 6 lug 16x7 rims. My original tire size was 265/70r16 but I recently moved up to 285/75r16 and now my tires rub up against the frame rail on full lock a decent amount (see attached picture). They don't rub the control arms but are a bit too close for comfort. What size offset should I get for new rims?

I don't know jack shit about offset and my buddies told me 12 but they're kinda bro's and I don't want my wheels sticking a foot out from my fenders lol

So I thought I'd run over to TW where I always get the help I need!

Are you sure the factory rims are 8" wide. I have 285s and have the same problem.

    These are 7".

EDIT: I think your "bro" buddies might be on the right track.

The stock wheels are 7" wide with 4.5" BS. An 8" wide wheel with 3.5" to 4" BS will keep them off the frame rail. YOu could also use a set of 1.25" spacers instead of new wheels

    ^^ What he said.

An 8" rim is better for a 285. It fits on a 7" rim, but I think 7.5" is the recommended minimum.

Yeah they're actually 16x7 my bad, but if I were to get rims, what would be a good offset?

The idea is that less back space (lower offset) pushes your wheel further out away from the frame. This reduces rubbing on your frame and UCA but also can increase the rubbing you may have on the fender/pinch weld. Typically on 1st gens, 4" BS on an 8" wide wheel is about the perfect amount to have no frame rub while minimizing fender/pinch weld rub.

I'll back this up. This is my current set up. I think 4.5" bs 8" wide will clear but will rub the frame a little.

Do you guys think 3.75" or 4.25" of backspace would be better? I take my truck off road so I'd like to account for travel, etc..

The question I'd ask is do you ever plan on going 35s? If so go 3.5" bs. If not 4" will be fine with an 8" wide wheel. +/- .25" isn't really going to matter IMO. I've had to do a fair amount of trimming just to clear 285s. At least an inch of fender trimmed off. I don't regret it and would do it again in a heartbeat.

Edit: if you have the factory flares you can trim the fender and move them back and you'll never have the visual trimmed fender. Search TTORA. I think NorcalPR had it in his build thread. I might have a little about it in my build thread.

The backspace you go with may be determined by which wheels you can find and what BS they come it. Seems like most 16" wheels come in a 4.5" BS. I know that most of the SCS wheels come in a lower BS to keep those tires off the frame. ALso, I think that Procomp alloys come in a 4" BS

Will do, I have my flares off but I'll look into that one if the cuts are ugly. I'll probably just go with 4" of bs. 33s are the biggest I'll go lol

    ^^

I'm running OME lift w/ 16x8 0ffset (4.5 bs) and have no rubbing on pinch, very very little rubbing on frame while at full lock. I'm sure some serious off roading would be a different story.

I am about to buy rims for my truck and im a little worried about rubbing myself.
    my setup:
    95.5 with fenders
    1in body 4in suspention lift

I planned on buying some pro comp 15x10in steel rims with 3.75in back spacing

    would 33x12.5in tires rub?

I'm running that tire size with 15x8 wheels and the same 3.75 BS. That's with 2.5" of suspension lift and rubbing is pretty minimal. I did the pinch weld "mod" and trimmed a bit of the fender next to it as well. I'd say you should be ok, but with a 10" wide wheel you may run into some issues. I can't speak from experience though as I've never run that wide of a wheel on a Tacoma.

yeah my other option on Amazon is the pro comp 15x8 with 3.5in backspacing. they are 20 cheaper per wheel so that would be nice. I just figured that if i could go with a wider wheel, why not just in case i every wanted 35s.

IMO, the 8" wide will make it easier to clear those tires. If you went 35's, what width would you be running? If you're thinking 35x12.5, you'd still be fine with the 8" wheel. Just my $.02. Ultimately it's your truck and if you want the stance of 10" wide wheels then go for it.
