If you had to choose between a Chevy Silverado or a GMC Sierra which would you trade in for?

The problem for me is that I amcompletely conflicted since I have never owned a gmc or Chevy. All my life I have heard negativity about the brands. Any thoughts on that?

I wouldn't trade for either. Right before my 16 Tacoma I had a 15 Sierra.

It was in the shop every week with issues, broken parts, recalls and even though it only had 8000 miles on it the frame was rotting out.

Every weld and crossmember was all rust, transfer case mounts were rusted to the point it looked like a 15 year old truck.
Rear frame section was bubbles and mostly brown from rust.

And yes it was undercoated and it never saw winter or the woods.

Your going to get a lot of shit. But both are the same truck and good trucks at that. Guys will knock them and me for saying it but when my land cruiser motor goes out in the next few years its getting an LS motor and tranny swap. GM makes these trucks as fleet vehicles. Fleet vehicles have serviceable parts. The parts are easy to find and often plentiful. I'm sure it will be a great truck, my best friend has only had Chevy trucks and they have pros and cons like any other vehicle. 3rd gen Tacoma is perfect example. People have complaints about it every few minuets so nobody can say one manufacturer is perfect. Buy the truck and if you don't like it sell it and see what you do like.

It's all the fan boys that just want to trash other brands for whatever reason. I don't know what it proves. I'm willing to bet many of them haven't even owned the brand or blow their issues with them out of proportion. You're on a Toyota forum so they will naturally trash everything but Toyota. Toyota isn't the greatest brand available. Neither is ford, Chevy, dodge, Nissan, etc. All have recalls, all have a full parts and service center, all have unhappy customers. All also have happy and loyal customers.

Buy what you like. Test drive a variety of trucks and get a feel for them. GM does a satisfaction program where you can turn it in if you really don't like it.

I have owned a GMC Sierra and I do not think you could go wrong with either. For me I think each one offers a different look depending on the color you choose but at the end of the day they are very similar. I would not get the tundra for the poor mpg, the gmc I had offered better mpg than my 4Runner, the gmc had a 6.2 liter so that has to tell you something. I like the tundras but something needs to be done about the mpg and possibly making changes to the transmission. I also do not think you will find a difference with quality regardless which option you choose, those 5.3's go forever

If it were me, I would not buy either of the two choices, if I wanted a full size V8 it would be a Tundra. For those with gas mileage concerns, there are plenty of 4 cylinder small cars on the market. As far as Tacoma MPG goes, my 3rd Gen Tacoma has gotten advertised MPG since day one.

    It's all preference.

I will add in that my Sierra needed 2 exhausts replaced, radiator, thermostat, rear leaf spring, tailgate hinges, frame rusting, transfer case and front diff problems.

Truck was less than 6 months old. Never abused either.

I think I was more upset that gm wouldn't do much to help me out at all.

I agree with this approach, each truck and brand will offer a different truck. It's important to like it regardless of what people say all day long. When I was searching for a new shotgun specifically for small bird most of the reviews I read offered good feedback but until I actually shot the gun and got a good feel none of the mattered. I ended up picking the one least favored by most experts. Each person has a preference so it's important to find the one that feels right to you.

Why have you not considered the F-150? The new 2017 3.5 Eco-boost has more torque than the GM 6.2 and even the outgoing 3.5 Eco-boost outperforms the 6.2 it in towing tests, while giving the fuel economy of the 5.3. Plus the 700lb weight reduction of the all aluminum alloy body. It is also the first to introduce the new 10 speed transmission. It is by far the far more advanced pickup.

I agree with you, that's why I'm not tempted to buy one when pricing Tacoma vs Tundra. However, I'm purely basing full size for Tundra for quality & reliability. Tundra definitely does need total refresh.

OP, don't let us Toyota guys sway you either way. Get what YOU want.

Does the 10 speed transmission shift anywhere like the new tacoma's transmission? I hate this Tacoma on the highway....

The 10 speed f150 isn't at dealers yet. It's the very first vehicle to get that transmission so I wouldn't buy one. Look at how good toyotas new transmission is.

I love the new F-150 and have heard great things about it. The new 10 speed is a game changer.

It has solid reviews from automotive journals, saying it is nearly unnoticeable and actually fixes the haunting problem compared to the 6spd trucks. But I have no first hand experience. Unlike the low torque Toyota 3.5 that is designed to rev for power, the F-150 has a staggering 470 lbs of boosted torque. It will not need to rev. 10 speed will be available next month and is going to further leave the competition behind. I would wait and take a look before buying anything else.

I just recently sold my 14' GMC Sierra cause I got sick of the horrible ride quality. It was a z71 4x4 SLT, MSRP was 51k and I paid 40k, so I couldn't pass up the deal at the time. They are in my opinion the best looking trucks on the road, but are so cheaply made its frustrating. And GM customer service has been nowhere near as helpful as Toyota has been. I had an 08 Silverado, identify equipped, and it rode night and day better then the 14' Sierra. Even on the slightest turns with bumps or any imperfections on the road, the sierras rear end would start skipping as the frame and suspension were to stiff to absorb anything. Would chatter my teeth it rode so bad. I've owned GM vehicles all my life and am disappointed in how bad quality went down after their bail out. I miss the extra interior room and gadgets and gizmos it offered, but couldn't stand having the whole thing rattle like an old bucket down the road.

It hurts me to recommend this, but look at Fords until GM gets back on track.

Yea so I just test drove a GMC Sierra SLT 4x4 annnndddd I still have my Tacoma. I have driven a 2016 Tundra and even with all of the extra features that the Sierra had, honestly I am done looking at General Motors for a vehicle. The salesman was a jerk and on top of that the ride wasn't nearly as nice as the Tundra. Nor was it anywhere near worth the money. God that was awful.

EDIT: 2017 GMC Sierra SLT 4x4

I'd wait for the 2019s to hit the lots. I think both the Chevy and the GMC look nice...
