Can't for the life of me get the tail-housing off the back of the transmission to remove that bearing for the coupler. I took the 3 bolts off the bottom and 4 from the inside. It does not even budge, I smacked it with a dead blow a few times. I think the FIPG is a big culprit of that.

I know one time when I did it we took pics to update the instructions ( going to make new ones that are a more detailed than the current ones)

The instruction/ photo guy who took them is at a doctors appointment right now.. If you wanta text me and remind me to check with him 8018859813..

IIRC we had to get pretty aggressive with my rubber dead blow.

So there shouldn't be anything holding it together if you removed the 7 bolts. Hopefully this helps. This is from the Low Range 2001 Double Cab.

    Remove this clipremove clip.jpg

Then pound the bearing out. Make sure you don't break the sensor (vss) we removed it then re installed it just to be safe.

Here you can see the sensor and see how if you put that down on the table ( unless you use the edge) you could break it while knocking the bearing out.clean surface.jpg

That first picture is exactly what I was looking for my FSM does not have instructions for even removing the seven bolts they only show a prerunner tail housing. Does anybody know the torque specs on those seven bolts, they go into aluminum so I figure it won't be that high. Next thing to tackle is to figure out all the excess wiring. The old T-case had two indicator switches both 3 wires, I'm assuming it's the 4-High and 4-Low then it also has the harness for the motor on the back that I don't need. I'd rather not have all these wires hanging around. Retracing them through the harness is going to be a pain in the ass. I also don't need the 4 wheel drive computer in the kick panel anymore, with the R1A case's I really only need to lengthen the 3wire speedometer cable. The adapter that I bought from trail-gear doesn't really screw onto the speedometer gear don't know if it's faulty or it's just trail gear being Tg. Feels like it wants to cross thread so I haven't pushed the issue. I need to get this thing driveable I need to put gas in it and I need to let it run it's been sitting for pretty much like six to eight months, I would start it up every so often but it need's some drive time.

I left the harnesses from the tcases dangling under there, and left the computers in the kick panels because fuck it. What screw in parts from tg are you talking about? It should be either splice and lengthen the 3 speedo wires, or using a tacoma to vss adapter if going to a gear drive rear case. I used an inchworm adapter that had one allen head bolf on it.

I remember reading about people having problems with that trail gear adapter when i swapped in my lefty, hence why i went with the inchworm adapter.

I would yank all the aux lights and non stock electronics off first, i bet thats the source of the parasitic draw.

Do the threads on the TG version seem off?
Marlin makes the same adapter, few bucks more. I've had it in since the IFS 4wd conversion. Never had an issue, first few turns were easy then about the last 2-3 were tight but not enough to crack the plastic.

I've only done one of the TG vss adapters and had no issue and its less work and less money than the Inchworm one.

Its not tight at all it. Its hard to explain it's like the adapter is too big for the threads of the speedo housing. And it doesn't thread on straight not even the first threads. I bought it and probably over a year or two ago in anticipation for the swap so who knows where the receipt went. I could either try to find another speedo gear housing or buy another VSS adapter and hope it's not wrong like this one.

Doesn't sound like mine at all.

Looking at the price for a new digital vss, it probably wouldn't hurt to try the Marlin adapter, and even the inchworm adapter.

@ToyRyd04 I wonder why the marlin one is twice as expensive as the TG one (maybe because it actually works ). I didnt mean buying a whole new sensor, just the part that the VSS screws on to. I need to figure out what speedo gear tooth count matches up to 4.88's the closest too. At 70mph on the speedometer, gps and speedtraps had me at 62.

If you need to purchase a new VSS, go with the Inch Worm product.

I went with a Dakota Digital piece for the speedo correction. Works well.

Got the tailhousing off. I let it sit for a day, trans fluid got in between the FIPG and the housing to make it easier to seperate. Couple wacks with the deadblow and it came right off. A good amount of trans fluid came out as well, even with the trans supported with a jack. Have a drain pan ready, I wasn't ready for that much fluid loss. Used a couple blocks of wood, a brass drift and the bearing came right out.

@James at Lowrange do you see a problem reinstalling the orange oil guard. I took the bearing apart and I'm just using outer race to maintain proper spacing for the c-clip. The coupler fits through it with some daylight all around it.

Still need torque specs for the 7 tail-housing bolts and the adapter bolts.

I guess it shouldn't hurt anything. Or you can just leave it all out.

In the notes on page 1 of instruction it gives the torque specs of the 8mm bolts 19 ft-lbs and the 10 mm bolts 29 ft-lbs

@James at Lowrange I just left it out it seemed like a good idea but might as well do it according to directions. It's all buttoned up and ready to accept the cases. I was talking about torque specs for the 7 tailhousing bolts with 14mm heads but I just tightened them up to feel. Tomorrow I'll bolt the cases up, then the shifter debacle shitstorm will ensue. Sorry for the repetitive posts but we all know how this shit works, one step forward 2 steps back :smash:.
