Does anyone have pics or video that might help me best find the stock locations of the transmission breather and transfer case breather, and some how-to's on extending them? I've spent the past few weeks trying to find information, but the few posts I've been able to find aren't applicable to me. They're all 1st gen, 3rd gen, FJs, manual trans, etc. The only thing I could find that (I think) is applicable to 2nd Gen V6 AT builds are from a few posts @06Offroad made a couple years back. From the pics, it seems like the breathers are damn near impossible to reach while the trans is still installed.

I've seen a couple of others say they've extended them, but don't describe how or only show what they did as far as mounting the new breather location further up in the engine bay. I don't need any more of that info (or front/rear diff info). I'm interested to see how people actually reached the original trans/t-case breathers, how they went about disconnecting them, and suggestions on the fittings and hose they used when extending (guessing 1/4" or 5/16" for both?).

Appreciate any input from those who have done it themselves. I plan to make a "How-To" mod post either from the information passed along or having to try and figure it out for myself - assuming I can still type after all the knuckle busting...

One is the front diff breather.
The other is both the transmission and transfer case - they tee together just after they exit.
    Not sure which is which.

Thanks Fury, for the reply. I knew one was the front diff, but from some other posts and a few parts diagrams I've seen, I was under the impression the other breather was for the ADD (Automatic Differential Discomnect) on the front diff.

If you check out the link in the OP, some of the pics of the removed transmission show both trans and t-case breathers laying right on top of the trans. So I have an idea where they should be, but with the trans still installed in the truck I'm trying to figure out if they're reachable or visible through the engine bay.

    INCORRECT.

One (bigger) is for the front diff case, the other, smaller, is for the front diff ADD actuator vent.

Transfer case actuator vents into the t case itself, the tcase vents to a line that runs along the top of the trans and ends before the bell housing.

Transmission vents out the top and has a line that runs up the top of the bell housing and stops before it gets to the motor.

Thanks, this was my best guess based on everything I'd read so far. Any idea if they're visible and/or reachable from the engine bay (or know of any pics)? My guess would be "no", since it's so far down. This is sounding more and more like I'm gonna have to reach from underneath and do this all by feel - ugh.

You MIGHT be able to see the trans breather on the back side of the motor looking down the firewall from the passenger side. Tcase breather is gonna be all by feel.

    This!

OP, I extended them on my old FJ years ago and they were a PITA to get to. I used to have a parts diagram that showed where they were and I'd have to dig it up for you

I ran out to my 4Runner and took these pics. I'm pretty sure the two lines are the breathers

I'm sure I felt the trans and transfer lines tee together and then head up toward the engine bay. I assumed it terminated in my pic. I will have to trace them more closely.
    Until then I stand corrected.

Thanks all for the additional replies.
@4x4Runner - Appreciate your info and pics. I believe the PITA part. From all the other stuff I've read, I'm pretty sure the FJs and 4runner trans/t-case breathers are ran a little differently from the Tacos (which surprises me given how much they share with 2nd Gen Tacos otherwise...), but I will still definitely keep these in consideration. Don't want to brush it off and waste my own time!

I've set aside time to get under the truck on Saturday and take a good look (eyes and camera on my phone) and feel, and try to come up with an approach. I'll try to document as best I can to hopefully save other people some time in the future!

Hey, I know it’s fairly old now, but did you ever find the answer to these questions? Looking to relocate my rear diff breather and I figure I should get all the necessary ones out of the way! 2nd gen 4L AT.

    Thanks!

Can't believe it's been a year already, but no, haven't found any more detail. I did take a few minutes to try and scope them out while under my truck at one point, but couldn't even get a view let alone able to physically reach them. If I get substantial time I might come up with a game plan, but for now I'm just doing what I can to keep out of deep water. Worst case - if I dip in for too long, I'll just make sure to swap out the fluids soon after.

Not sure if that's the same trans for the non-prerunner, but it looks similar to another pic I've seen for the 4x4 models. Problem is, this doesn't help when the transmission is actually installed. It only tells me where to *try* to reach. No easy way to actually get there and extend that I can think of. Hence the original post - I was hoping someone came up with a procedure that made it a little easier.

PITA is right. "High up" is relative to where you go. I go back in the Pine Barrens in NJ frequently, and even on mapped dirt roads it's easy to come across water well over this. Just need some rain and maybe high tide. Would kill to be out in CA, KY, TN, etc. where you're not riding right at sea level.
