Just bought a 2017 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Sport with a manual transmission... two days ago! This is my whopping 2nd post so I am the greenest of green here but I have been lurking here for awhile searching/searching/searching. I have found a plethora of great information on many topics and so far just about every question I had has been answered. For that I thank those of you "answerers" who contribute. There are far more "askers" though, and on the subject of unit sales and discussion, there seems to be no dedicated thread for this topic. There are some threads on sales, but it seems like people would rather opine and guess about the topic rather than post hard data. If, in my new-ness, I missed it then by all means direct me to it and delete this one. I understand having good data gathered in one place!
I am not a salesman, I am an engineer. I have been designing for almost 27 years now, so I have a few rings in my tree so to speak. I like good data. Data does not lie. Data does not offer opinions. Yes, it's true we can make numbers say whatever we want them to say, but that's only after analysis! Raw data is truth.
The data comes from Good Car Bad Car. Over the years I have compared their numbers with several OEM published numbers and found them to be accurate. Toyota also publishes their sales numbers, but Good Car Bad Car formats them into nice tables and saves me the step.
Again, if this is available somewhere else and I suck at search, please forgive, delete and move on. If you guys like the data, I will be happy to update this thread monthly. Also if you like I can give my analysis but this is fairly clear cut. So, on to the charts:

The first two charts are Tacoma Monthly Sales from 2010 to April YTD. The last chart is Yearly Sales from 2002 to current. The last pic is my new truck. No troll here.Tacoma Monthly Sales.jpg Tacoma Yearly Sales April.jpg New Tacoma 1.jpg

Numbers are good, but how about add market share? That will be the best indicator. Sales increased because the midsize market has heated up a bunch in the past few years but what has that done for their market share?

look at 2009 and 2010. The recession really affected auto sales.

We are definitely past due for another recession. The longer this upcoming recession gets put off the worst it's going to be.

Absolutely, market share is one metric. Unit sales can really only do three things though. They can increase, decrease or stay the same. Market share is a resultant of unit sales doing one of those three things. Market share is a Comparative ANALYSIS of the raw data versus the market, not the raw data itself. I wanted to just post the raw data so people can then use it to draw their own conclusions!

I will include this chart though, which is more raw data with a bit or analysis (rankings) thrown in. Here you go:

I noticed your pic, you have a nice truck there. Inferno color can look different in the sun vs shade. I absolutely love the inferno color like no other.

BTW there was a feeble attempt by me to figure out production stats and how common vs how rare some Taco configurations are. I'll find it and post the link here. My hope is that maybe we all can figure out the production/sales of the different configurations.

One thing I noticed is that the 2016 sales you posted in the table indicates about 191,000 Tacomas sold that year. I roughly estimated 190,000 based on rather inprecise info I was able to gather from various sources. I may have muddled the subject of production versus sales, but it's not too much if a stretch to think that sales are a rough indicator of production.

Also, I wonder if the Tacomas that didn't sell in 2016 (if there were 2016 Tacomas that went unsold) become 2017's. I'm sure though that the 2016's all sold.

Why did you go for the Manual trans?
How much less was the Manual?

For practical discussion every unit produced is sold, with the exception of testing, accidental damage, etc. Vehicles do not change years. If it was produced between a certain time frame then that vehicle will be that year. For example if a vehicle was produced in August 2016 and didn't sell until 2019, it would just be an old 2016 that hadn't been titled.

No idea. I didn't even price an automatic. I went with a manual because I have always like manuals and have owned several. I feel you have a better connection to your vehicle and you actually have to do something for your vehicle to move properly, besides just press the accelerator pedal.
