Help people I'm Nick new to this site I got and 09 tacoma 2.7 4x4 5 speed access cab.long story short been In love until it left me on the side of the road.. truck died found out from the shop no spark so the replaces the cam and crank sensor 400$ tow 100$ labour 200$ so far now they tell me no compression I must have broke my chain =/ @ 190 000 km and I am anal with my oil changes and maintenance use synthetic Amsoil. Anyway they are saying new engine I'm still paying for the truck it is in mint shape so here is my question...
Is this a common problem ?
Should I rebuild the engine or go new rebuilt or should I go a different set up all together I hurd 2jz,4.0,3.4 What's my best option ? Help please and thank you.

    Welcome to TW

First thing I would do is get a second opinion. Make sure that really is the problem and go from there.

I hope you get this issue resolved quickly and relatively cheap.

I plan on it I am going to take the truck out of that shop today like why did they not tell me this before I spent money on a cam and crank sensor

They should have known something was OFF if they tried to crank it, a broken or jumped chain sounds different then a normally cranking engine.
If in fact the chain jumped or broke, I would put a used motor in it. Will be cheaper then a rebuild, and everything just bolts in.

Go back and ask the first crew to refund some dinero. They should have done a THOROUGH examination before fleecing your wallet. This shop specializes in guess work because their diagnostic skills are 2 out of 5 on a 5 scale.

Broken timing chain is confirmed or is this a guess, too?

Unless you plan on doing some mods while you're in there rebuilding ($$).

A low mileage junk yard motor is the most straight forward approach. Less labor mostly.

I wonder if you can get those low mileage Japanese crate motors in a 2.7.

The new shop I am at said he has a place that gets them he is going to go over everything and make 100% sure then go from there. I started talking to the mechanics at the new shop and could tell right away they know a lot more guess I will see. I only went to the other shop bc had no one else.

I was thinking this too. I would get a 2nd opinion, something doesn't sound right.

A broken timing chain would be immediately obvious based on sound alone, so I am wondering why they would replace your sensors first.

Anyway, if the engine is trashed, I would just get a used one.
