Take the filter off the valve body and give it a good cleaning . the filter is like a window screen . clean it and put it back .
save your cash for the important things

Varsol works good if its available in your area . Some guys prefer safety clean or paint thinner . Any mineral oil based cleaner will work

Do you prefer the premade gaskets or the rtv gasket sealant?

I prefer the cork gasket only because it makes for a clean job . Silicone or ( fipg) works fine in this application but is messy to work with and takes a long time to clean as I am sure you are finding out

Okay got the tranny back together and took it out for a test drive. The detent spring did make a difference in the way the truck shifted, I always thought the shifter was loose cause it wouldn't click and would be very easy to push into other gears. That definitely helped tighten the shifter up, but I still have a metallic sound when in idle and barely moving in R, D, 1,2. It is really noticeable when after it warms up and I have it in gear but gas pedal not engaged. It also starts to shutter at times during the metallic sound.

Alright thought I would update you guys on the situation. I ended up removing the old transmission from the truck. As I assumed it was the torque converter that was trashed and was making the noise. I decided to go with a used transmission out of a '96 Tacoma A340F because the one I pulled from the truck already had an aftermarket torque converter and looked like it had been rebuilt once before. Anyways long story short, got the (newer) transmission in the truck in about a couple days and everything runs GREAT!! Back to normal and seems to shift a lot better than the older tranny as well as going in and out of 4hi 4lo. Thanks for the help on here guys!!
