Having an interesting time with the Taco this last couple weeks. Prior to driving back up to Alaska this month, I experienced some surging / stumbling which I suspected was either a fuel filter or fuel pump. Changed the fuel filter first and it cleared up that issue. The truck ran great no starting issues until I got into Alaska, then after fueling in Tok, it cranked and cranked and acted like it wasn't getting spark. Let it set for a few minutes and tried again, cranked a long time then coughed and started after I pumped the foot feed. Same thing happened 3 different times in Fairbanks the next morning. It then worked fine throughout the day until I stopped at the store and went in for last second forgotten groceries. Came out and it acted the same way. This same sequence has happened about 2- 3 days later. The codes come up as P0320 and P0325 anti knock for each side? as well as P0420 : catalytic failure?
Seems to be intermittent but I'd like to sort it out.
Idle wise it has been kinda high, a low of 800-to almost 1500 rpm, I have been able to kick it down after a bit. Doesn't seem to be temp related.
Also is random about idle dropping to a 'normal' of
Seems to have a fair bit of oil in the airbox. Even cleaned up the MAF sensor - starts a bit easier. So next step is try to get the PVC valve out and see if it is defective. Any Tacoma gurus have any ideas?
    Thanks

Wish I knew, there is some behind the air filter. I am still trying to trace out all the hoses. Not that familiar with EFI rigs.

check the intake tube and see where the oil is coming from. there was another post on here that the oil was coming from the rear hose right before the TB. I think that's connected to the back of the block and can get blow-off?

Thanks, I seem to remember there being a line from that area when I took it all apart and cleaned the MAF prior to departure.
That would make sense since it requires regular cleaning. I need to track down an owner's manual, they usually have a maintenance schedule in them.
I'll tear into it tomorrow if I don't get called out. Would like to get it sorted before heading to los anchorage to track down some 16" wheels, had 2 flats last work shift, so I figure the upgrade schedule has been moved up as well. Seperated one tire- now a cross your fingers spare- and had to put 1 plug and a plug patch in the other. A bit of a distraction with 85 miles of gravel road to before the pavement.
Sorting through some of my spare 85 tires to get something better for the 250 miles ahead.

If it has a K&N filter that someone has over oiled there may be a small amount that comes off.
Check you spark plug wires & coils for proper resistance.
Fuel supply to the engine is controlled electronically. If pumping the accelerator helps, it could be the engine is getting too much fuel and got flooded. By pumping the pedal more air is let in the engine & clearing out the rich mixture.

It is a normal stock filter. I'll be looking into the coils and wires today if I don't fly out on a service call, thanks for the info.

As this is the first time I have really torn into a newer vehicle it has been interesting to say the least.
So far I have discovered the #1 ignition coil is defective. I think there is a good chance that might be the problem.
So I have ordered new wires and a full set of used coils from an ebay vendor that have a 1 yr warranty. Should be here when I get back from work next week. So we'll see what is next.
An oddity I noticed, I have oil leaking on each valve cover so I ordered a valve cover gasket set to Install next week as well. So when I pulled the #2 coil, there was alot of oil in the well where the plug is, so I am guessing that there is some type of seal/gasket/O-ring that seals between the well and the valve cover? I guess I'll find out when I tear into it next week.
Thanks for info guys, more fun awaits.....

Well a brief synopsis of what came of this, knock sensor codes, started to address this, along with an exhaust leak- split crossover pipe flange and discovered a glycol leak- which lead to a new radiator and a flush which then woke up the sleeping dragon-head gasket.

Basically opted for a salvage engine over R&R head gasket due to some other troubling noises that sounded like the beginnings of a rod bearing. So happy ending- 04 engine with 112k, running much better. Now for other things on the list...
