After agreeing to assume responsibility, AAA is suddenly reversing course a bit. Saying they didn't play a role in this, but rather the towing company is at fault. My argument to them was, "look, this a AAA approved road service co, and they were sent by you. I didn't choose them."
The guy was completely non committal as to who's going to pay for this. I waited for his phone call all day yesterday. I'm still waiting today after 19 days. I have an excellent BS detector, and it's telling me this may not go well.
The garage they towed it to wants to evaluate the truck and look for a short. I'm guessing they're looking for anything at this point to point responsibility from them.

Wow that's lame maybe there is a way to go "higher up the chain" at AAA? if you have a rep you are working with perhaps ask to talk to his boss. Pretty straight forward they jumped it and it broke can't believe they are saying otherwise.

For future reference . Use it 2 or 3 times a year and monitor the calculated CCA, when it falls below 65 to 70% of the rated CCA it's time to think about a new battery; below 60% you're on borrowed time...

I hope you're keeping notes... They will be handy if this goes to court...

The garage they towed it to without your knowledge or consent?

Small claims court is your best bet, they are usually somewhat biased toward the "little guy"; you can bet AAA has lawyers on staff/on call--and it you read the fine print in their agreement you may find that they have placed all liability for services with their contractors, i.e. the towing company--how deep are their pockets?

Judging by the quality of their employees not too deep, if a real fly-by-night operation they can go belly-up and open up tomorrow in the wife's or a relative's name.

'Twas me I would not wait any longer, 19 days is complete BS--just get it repaired and send AAA and the towing company a bill, with net 10 terms (if anyone asks that is your payment policy)--if you are not paid in 10 days file a claim with your local small claims court, throw in something for any expenses you have incurred by being without the truck for 20 days (or however long)...

Well tomorrow's the day (I've heard this before). I'm finally going to meet AAA's chief claims adjuster. He's driving in from another state to meet me at the repair place. AAA has been promising to put me in touch with this guy for over a week, but always changes plans at the last moment. However, I was unable to pin him down on a time. I guess I'm just supposed to sit around and wait for his majesty to arrive.

Good luck. Try to be calm and controlled, but if they start treating you like an àsshole, it's OK to become an àsshole¹...

Ok, here's an update, and it's not good.

Pending a formal review, AAA said they would seek to resolve the ECM unit. Notice I said resolve, and not pay for.
The towing service/garage admitted the error, and said it would make the repair. Initially AAA said a new ECM would be installed. After a week of doing nothing, I made a call. Plans changed. Now they said the garage will only agree to install a junk yard unit. OK, I reluctantly agree. Another week goes by, and AAA's senior adjuster wants to meet with me at the garage. Plans change again. The adjuster says they will only support rebuilding the old ECM unit from my truck. This way they only have to replace the damaged chips. Another cost cutting move.
It was obvious to me the garage pressured them into this beforehand.
So here's where I stand. That was 2.5 weeks ago. The ECM unit was removed and sent "somewhere" to be rebuilt and my truck is sitting in the back lot like a dead horse. I've make at least 10 calls to AAA and almost that many to the garage. I explained to AAA we are now going into day number thirty six (36) and this is really impacting my ability to work. After days of calls, AAA told me due to the Memorial day weekend, they'll have some sort of answer for me next Wednesday, May 31. That will be forty two (42) days and counting. Keep in mind, they will only have an answer for me, the truck will not be ready.
I'm completely at my wits end with this. AAA is completely unsympathetic, and as a result I have no leverage with the garage. I see this easily going 50 days.

That blows. Most big companies are that way. Its real easy for them to not answer the phone or to sit in their chair and give you the run around.

Lawyers are pricey, difficult to run to them or you'll spend more than what a new ecu costs.

Have you contacted your insurance company? Won't this be covered under comprehensive? You get your truck fixed....the insurance company gets their money from AAA & company.

I thought of that, but I'm concerned my rate may go up as a result of a claim.

I am going to tell you something you probably don't want to hear.
You should have called a lawyer up first and not the 29th call. People want to bargain (read fuck you over) these days.
Anything to save one dollar. The last post about getting help from a news station is excellent. They can really
ruin someones day. Usually. but not always.
Call A Lawyer and the attorney general's office.
