Rear differential leak

Axles?

 

Oh yeah. Sorry. The axles will need to be pulled out 3 or 4 inches

 

That's what I was wondering if I had to pull axles . Worked on many of my own cars even rebuilt couple engines , even a Rotary Engine but never a rear end . I'm a Back yard mechanic that never went to school for it and learned all from books and you tube lol . But I try and do it right the first time and the correct way

The torque for the carrier to axle housing nuts is shown as 18 lb·ft in the exploded diagrams in FSM repair section--for both the locking and non-locking differentials:



This correlates with the torque specified in the 3rd gen recall document; and with what would be reasonable for class 4.x metric studs. My references state 14 to 18 lb·ft for M10 4.6/4.8 (I ran a mill file across the end of one, they are not hardened)

However it appears to be incorrectly specified as 33 lb·ft in the torque specification table--torquing these mild steel studs to 33 lb·ft would be quite enough to snap them off:

If your pulling axles you might want to consider doing the axle seals.

 

Are you sure it's not leaking from the breather? Run any deep water lately?
