So far no dirt or water gets in the ram air scoop.

Still like the intake, I feel it's a good mod that helps top end power and no more rocks and sand in the intake.

Now I have sent my ECU to orange virus tuning to be reflashed...
The Volant intake is smaller diameter than the stock intake that is why it was running so rich at low rpm.
Hopefully OVT can adjust for the new intake and fix the factory tune.

I would say ram air scoop very good mod good money spent.
Full intake ok mod below 3000 rpm good above 3000 rpm with the stock computer... But again results can vary using the stock ecu...

You think they can remap it just like you want?

They should be able to fix the mapping. I'll find out, ECU is on the way back right now.
Might not be perfect but hopefully much better than stock.
The main thing is changing the parameters so it much closer to optimal and fixing stock compromises.
Drive ability should be much better.

Tested the intake up north runs great, no more rocks, dirt and sand in the intake.
I used to have to clean the sand out of my filter every day, now no sand.
Only a few muddy drops of water made it inside but filter is still clean after tons of big puddles at speed...

The ram air intake is worth it, and can be bought separately.

Now the intake is working much better after the reflash of the ecu by ovt. Now that we can get the ecu reflashed, getting an intake will be better money spent. Power all the way from 1600 to 5000 rpm...
Still eating gas, no way to get this engine more efficient.

Next test is the dunes with an updated ecu flash...

Went to the dunes , intake works great. Good torque and top end..
Only a little sand got in, I think mostly from getting behind sand rails, but I wanted to test worst case..

So most defiantly get the ram air scoop, but now that OVT is reflashing we can now mod out our trucks and get the full benefit.

The new OVT flash was much better..
The new flash with an electric fan added 3 MPG so I'm back to 16-17 mpg with 3" lift and 33" tires..
And yes 3 mpg is a huge change in range...

And we are still working on the tune, but now that we can override factory settings the power and mpg is much better..

And If you change the intake you will need a piggy-back like the unichip or better yet a reflash from OVT...

I still have the unichip so I can run different fuel maps, 1 for power and 1 for MPG..
Before the flash from OVT MPG was bad no matter what I did.
You need to fix the ecu to get back the MPG...
Now on the dunes I got 9-10 mpg and on the ride home with the econ map I got 16..
The flash with out the unichip I got 17..

I'm a engineer(who cares lol) but i think ,you should just try to flip your Volant intake pipe, so the maf sensor is closer to the intake box and crankcase vent pipe is after your maf sensor so this way you would have no code! that's what they did to fix the lean problem on the newer one! just saying lol, the same orientation as your first picture when you display the intake all apart, i'm sure it would fix the problem you have! maybe or close to sure that would help!

I am new to all of this, but have been looking at the Volant set up and been thinking of adding it to my '15 Tacoma, my question is where to get the correct mapping/tuning done after the install.

Pretty much my path forward. The aFe/TRD intake looked interesting, and I wrestled with the idea of URD TCAI. Just can't bring myself to mount an air filter outside of a truck. The scoop gives me an alternative to the URD, and shows that Volant at least tried to get air from outside the engine bay.

    Thanks for the writeup OP!

I went through the same thought, but the URD is for a street truck. The volant helps it breath better, get cold air and keep the filter clean...

Meh volant has intermittant lean issues, ive run the urd a few times for about a year, maybe 2.
On and offroad, engine still going strong as hell.

That said, my urd pulled in water from rain, or even off of other trucks spray on a wet highway, hit the maf sensor and caused the truck to stumble. So, NOT a street intake in my experience.

Can u run a hydrophobic sock?
Yes. Does it kill response, yes.
Can u run steel shield? Yes.
Did i when i had the issues i had? Yes

Not sure where im going but i had to waste my 2 pennies somehow

I've never been a fan of pulling air from the wheel well, which was a big factor in selection for me. I had a K&N in my '12 silverado and loved it. Have a K&N in my 05 RSX and while not loving it, I like it. Just can't get past the poor design for the Tacoma and the errors that oiled filters can cause.

As far as the lean issues, the general consensus is that the MAF Cal fixes most (if not all) of the problems with the Volant.

Random thouht... has anybody put the Volant scoop on an aFe...?

Yes, I have the volant scoop on a TRD Gen1 intake, which is practically identical to the aFe.

any cool air would be immediately warmed up by the stock box that sits right on the engine no?
