    Hello,

Thor joined our family when he was 8 weeks old and has been a joy to have ever since. Unfortunately we now have to find a new home for him. Thor loves to play and have fun but he doesn't realize his size (110lbs) and our 1 year old daughter is easily out matched by his size. He has accidentally knocked her down several times to include busting her nose. However, he has never been aggressive to her. And now we have a set of twins on the way  and we will obviously have a lot going on. I don't want to put him in a position where he could accidentally harm one of our kids, and it wouldn't be fair to him to always have him segregated away from the rest of us (which is what we are doing now that our 1 year old is highly mobile). I want him in a loving home where he gets the attention he needs and deserves. He is very smart and well behaved. He excelled in his weekly training and learned new things quickly. As I said before he is 110lbs. Both of his parents were imported from Germany. We had him neutered just after his first birthday, I believe. I do want to make sure he is going to a good home so I will have questions for anyone interested and some references form other members probably wouldn't hurt as we are new to the NC area. I just want him in a great home. If anyone knows of another resource I can use to find him a home please let me know as well. Here are some pictures of him

I have a friend who lives near Richmond, VA. She is a professional dog trainer/handler. She mostly works with Belgian Malinois's and the occasional GSD.

I'll pass this on to her.

Please reconsider! Your pup will protect your children with his life! Don't you have a yard to keep him in? Build him a nice dog house and he will be happy!

Even if you find him a good home what if those people end up giving him away to a not so good home?

Seems like he's putting the wellness of the dog as priority 1.1, second only to 1.0 - three young children.

A dog house isn't a solution for anything posted above.

Support helps more than misunderstanding and misdirection. At least you gave him a bump.

I'm definitely interested, my Grandpa used to raise and train German Shepards in Germany and sell them to the German Polizie. I've been brought up around them my entire life and have owned several of them and understand the breed. Only problem is I'm in New York. Beatifull dog btw.

Best advise by far. We did same think with our granddaughter. Kept him outside for a wile, and he'll understand that the kid is very important and back away. I still believe that what happened was your fault. If not properly introduced he will envy these who took his first place on the pecking order. Take your time and like hx989 said he'll protect your kids beater than anybody. We always had GS and one of them Max who was raised with our little girl, he will try to look thru us to make sure she's OK.

Valid arguments can be made for both sides no doubt. A dog is a man's best friend and I don't think this decision was made very easily by OP. But let's all respect his family's decision and someone semi-local try to help him out if possible.

Bleeding hearts come second to family issues, and kids come before dogs.

    Hence the thread.

No need to derail this guys thread with personal opinion. He's trying to find a new home. Let him, that's his choice.

Feel for you here man. Wife and I are currently trying to rehome one of my dogs due to some borderline aggression/energy issues. Not an easy decision but the right one for a family. Good luck and be patient.

Exactly. We love Thor and this decision didn't come easily but not only do we have our kids to think about, we can no longer give Thor the attention he deserves and that was a big factor.

If he's a member on here have him post or PM me please.

Than again, there are dogs and dogs. Lately we had another GS which cost us a lot of money, pedigrees, guaranty for hips etc. An idiot, I was out of town once when our daughter called to say she lost patience with the dumb dog. My answer was: open the side gate, take a 2/4 and hit his ass and hope he won't want to come back. Ended up giving the dog to a construction worker working for one of my neighbors. I felt that wasn't anything else I can do. So I know how it feels.

Only because he wanted to turn the dog loose on the street because he wasn't behaving.

The dog wouldn't leave his family's house and be left to the streets and cars flying down them - unless he was abused, you see. That makes it okay.

Comical admission after this earlier post, if you think hitting animals with lumber is comical, that is. At least the irony doesn't break bones or cause internal bleeding.

    Oh, and isn't a felony.

I don't feel anything close to wanting to hurt my dog. I don't think that story is comparable to my situation.
