Double checked with the PEng that cutting vent holes the sub facia would not be an issue then told the owner what I wanted to do and why , then we did it

Yeah, was wondering about those big holes, too. Plumber wouldn't even ask....

First time you've come up with a system like this?

Got the gas mileage down to 13mpg! Modification complete
The holes probably make a hell of a lot easier to keep the facia straight also:) My only concern would be water/moisture from weeping out of the the holes in the bottom(dripping down a bit ) Seems like it will work though...does the roof go right to the 2x that you attached? If so dripping shouldn't be a problem.

Roof panels to lower side of vent with panel edges folded up to prevent wind driven rain intrusion , custom L flashing over entire vent and down the top edge of the facia

That's what I thought of first. When I lived in the desert I had gaps in sprinkler coverage that would create brown spots. Had to do a lot of spot watering. But I'm also not an expert, so there very well could be other issues causing it.

Those fasteners need to be biscuit jointed into the boards or a different system ?

Yep, I saved about $600 by not buying the grooved boards, so now I have to use the biscuit joiner.

No, but they are very similar. They are called ipe clips.

Thanks. It is ipe. Its about the same cost for me as the composites. I'm really impressed with the look of it.

ive got paint on my deck and its really not that great looking. I would much rather have to oil it once a year (or whatever the interval is)

I've started using the Bear line of deck and fence stain. Penetrates well and picket fence stands up to 8 dogs beating on it. But i use it on pine.

This is what I have to put down on my Ipe Deck. I haven't used it yet, but this was the recommended finish for the Ipe. I personally would sand down your swing and oil it with this stuff.

If you really want to paint it, an epoxy is the way to go. Ipe is a very oily wood. Wipe it down with acetone first before painting to remove any oil on the surface and increase the chances of the paint sticking.
