    thankyou for this thread
no before pics but everything was bloody filthy
this only happened as I had replaced the battery as it was starting to get a little weak
in doing that my idle went down from 900 to 600 rpm , not good
in searching of a reason why this happened I found this thread
after cleaning everything it is now 1800 !! really not good
so hopefully after a bit more driving the ecu will settle things down a bit
    cheers

Is this something i should be doing around 50k? Especially if im not having any problems. When started truck seems to idle pretty high in park every morning, maybe 16/1700, for a couple minutes until i put it in drive. Too much going on right now so would rather tackle other more important stuff with my very little free time so looking for some input.

I finally got around to doing the TB and MAF on my 136k mile 06 yesterday. I tried it first without taking the TB off and just spraying, brushing and wiping. It did a bit of coughing and sputtering when I tried to fire it up, but once it cleared its throat it seemed to run pretty smoothly. Afterward however when started, its initial idle would be up around 2k and would slowly fall to about 1100 in neutral.. I took the whole TB thing off this morning and saw how much crud I had missed. Cleaned it again ( no coughing and sputtering when starting this time ). But I still have the high Idle speed. With all that said I have a question about one of your early pictures where you disconnect the battery. Was that done as some sort of safety precaution to prevent shorting something out, or was there another reason? Obviously, I skipped that step and was wondering whether that's the source of my high Idle speed. I saw the other entries where some people had the same problem with the high idle and I've put about 40 miles on the truck so far and the idle is still running high. It used to be about 650 in neutral before I messed with it.
By the way this is no criticism of your procedure, it was great and thanks for doing it, especially with the 1d10t proof pictures.

Okay. I wrote that post and then went out and yanked the negative wire, cranked the ignition switch for about 5 seconds, reconnected the neg wire after a few minutes and tried to fire it up. After about 3 minutes the RPMs dropped to about 700. Hot Diggety!! I was thinking you might want to emphasize that disconnecting of the Neg terminal!! And maybe copy down all those damn radio presets before doing it. Thanks again. I can't wait to see if this affects my MPG.

I just did this today. Took me about 1-2 hours, although I decided to disassemble the sensor on my AFe filter and remove the throttle body. At 52,000 miles there a considerable amount of carbon buildup. Followed it up with an "Italian tune-up".

Will have to see if it affects mileage. It does feel much better now, I can't say if that's the placebo effect though. :)

Thank you to the OP for taking the intimidation factor out of this!

The improvement will probably be much more noticeable in your case. You won't know until you open her up. Let us know how it goes.

Just did the TB/MAF cleaning. Right after getting everything put back together the idle was high ~1800.
Let it run while I picked up, ~8-10 mn. Idle down to about ~700. :D
    All is good in Tacomaland.

    Time for a beer!

I noticed great improvement in the idle Dept..from 2k to about 800. Also, my gas consumption is so much better..was at 240 miles per tank and since cleaning the throttle body it has jumped to 300..mind you I started using 91octane at the same time and used seafoam as well. Big difference, I'm glad I did this.

    TL;DR

I only have 95k miles on my truck. Worth the effort to clean the MAF or TB?

Yes. Easy to do and will help.

Think Rob just did his recently too, if you need another opinion.

I read more of the thread. Seems people have noticed improvement with half of the mileage I have. I'll do it tomorrow with my spark plugs. Just washed my AFE filter. It was so dirty, looked like it came from an old vacuum.

So what about cleaning things after the throttle body, like like the upper/lower intake manifolds?

Cleaned my MAF and throttle body yesterday. Truck has 120k miles and I was surprised how clean everything was. After I had everything cleaned and put back together the RPM's were high for a few miles but then everything settled back to normal. I have not noticed any difference so far in the idle or running of the truck. Have not checked the gas mileage to see if that improved. I have been running a oil catch can for a few years so maybe that makes a difference in keeping the MAF and throttle body clean.
