The hot spec is so that they can get it back to the customer without waiting over night. But in a troubleshooting situation, always adjust them cold to rliminate temp issues.

If doing you own work, also always adjust them cold

Go get a m1 and a napa gold filter. Swap one in and see if noise changes.

Usually tensioner/oil filter drain back issues only make noise at startup and guides make noise when coming off a rev. But so can crank or rod bearings. Is it a fast tap or a slower tap? Put a stethascope on the 4 valve cover bolts and see which are louder. Also steth all 4 injectors.

Any sign of damage on the cam lobes when you had it apart? Any of the valves overly loose or tight before you adjusted them? Did you only snug up the valve cover bolts, otherwise they can contact the cover and make noise.

Are you sure that you didnt put one of the long timing cover bolts in the wrong place? That has been known to happen and it will stop the tensioner from working.

I have had bad tensioners straight out of the package. But I have also seen bad tensioner rattle go for over 100k with no major issues. Sometimes the knock sensor picks it up and will retard the ignition.

Sounds like I am going to have a busy day off from work to do mechanic work. I made sure that I put all the cover bolts back in right because I used the new cover for bolt location as I removed them. I wonder if the quart of Lucas I put in was too much? Or if I should have used it at all? Thanks for all the information.

If you pull the valve cover, you can look down the inside of the timing cover and see the tensioner to see if a bolt is too near it.

Pulling the pan is going to be a bitch on a ifs truck without a bracket lift. Put some rachet straps on both ends of the diff to the motor mounts that way the diff wont twist off the floor jack while you are messing around.
