    Howdy,
I've got a 97 tacoma with a 3.4 that I needed to replace the airbox. I ordered a replacement from parts galaxy which is supposed to fit 1999-2004 3.4 tacomas. When I received the new airbox I quickly realized the MAF for my 1997 is not the same as the 1999 MAF. The 1997 MAF looks like the image below and connects to the intake tube on one side and inserts into the airbox on the other side.
    images_d139ecba536f38c00a60131d66dff6e3f026662a.jpg

The replacement airbox has a hard plastic MAF connector (which the actual MAF just bolts onto) that is permanently affixed to the airbox which then connects to the intake tube. Picture of replacement airbox and 1999 MAF below

So my question is, can I buy a 1999 MAF and install it in my 1997 with no ill affects? Do those MAFs have the same operational specifications and share the same wiring harness connections?

The wiring is a little different but the plug is the same .

Just a matter of looking at the EWD`s of both vehicles

I upgraded my MAF on my 97 to the same one on my 2000

Was it plug and play for you to upgrade your 97 to the 2000 MAF? Any other details on that?

    No!!!

On mine I think I had to move one wire on the sensor plug

It is a matter of looking and making sure the wires are going where they should be .

If you get it wrong it just will not start

Not knowing your skill level to me this was very simple but then I have done a few engine swaps so reading schematics comes easy

The drop in MAF from the later models is much cheaper... the older style is $$$. You can use the newer style but it WILL have to have a couple wires moved. You can search on this forum and Yotatech and find the ones you need to switch.

I thought the difference was thatthe older ones didn't have the IAT integrated into the MAF. idk for sure, that's just from reading random info over the years

Thanks for the info. I'm not huge on wiring although I "can" do it.

Thanks, I've had trouble finding links that have still functioning pictures as many of them are old links. I found one on ttora that seems to work:

Very doable, just re-pin the connector to match the pin out of the new MAF. There is a little plastic piece that is on the inside of the connector. That will pop out and
then you can get a small screwdriver under each pin and release the pin out to the back of the connector. I've done a few.....

Looking at the front of the plug, with the latch to the top, (pin side, not wire side) you read the female plugs left to right. You read male plugs right to left. Your plug is a female. Looks like the only wire that is in the correct place is the W/R wire which is power.

    Here is the 97 Tacoma

    And the 99.

Since we both have 97 3.4 v6, do you know if the newer mass air flow sensor will fit into the 1997
Tube section with just pinning the wires? And does the newer style MAF perform better? Better trim numbers etc.
I would like to keep the air tube section that came with the 1997

No it will not!! Completely different

I just cut the part where the MAF installs on the 2000 of a broken air box

One on the left old style on the right new style

I changed to only need to keep one spare on the shelf 001.jpg

Ok, great I was thinking there was a way to remove the sensor and replace it with the 2000 type.
Ok so the 95-98 tube is very restrictive, how restrictive is the 2000 tube section

I have been looking at this idea for a while. Bit the bullet and purchased the items needed to convert mine. Maybe it will help my pinging...

Different connections as was quoted in my thread by another smart individual, you can do a pin out for youre harness and move youre wires to work with that airbox.

I see that Napa has an adapter to adapt the new style sensor that goes in place of the old style MAF sensor

Here is the Napa part# BK7355895

It looks like this gets bolted to the Air Box with a Gasket to the opening where the old Style MAF sensor was attached.

You need to drill 4 holes.

I have never seen one of these in person
