Actually that's the way we were taught to do in mechanic school if we're out in the field and don't have access to a spring compressor. It's better because you have more control over the spring stored energy then say a strut coil spring compressor

 

Agee, but that still doesn't take the scetch factor out of it. Especially when you have only seen it done on you tube and have never performed work of this kind.
