Got the 3" Lift - Here's my thoughts

    3" Lift, 285/70r17, XD's
    Hey everyone,

First post. I've owned my 2008 Tacoma since 2010 and finally got around to what I have always wanted: a lift. I did a lot of research online and on TW and I felt that since I have gone through the process, this will be helpful for anyone who is considering something similar.

Goal: I don't go off-road, I really just like the look of a lift and bigger tires, especially on the long-beds. I already had gone up in tire size (265/70r17) and added the XD wheels, but I still felt the truck was not filled out. So I knew I wanted a little height and beefier tires.

Decision: I know they get a lot of flack on here, but the Rough Country lifts were the ones in my price range and since I don't go offroad except for the beach sometimes I figured I'll be ok. I went with the 3" Rough Country Lift:

    https://www.customwheeloffset.com/c...ear=2008&make=Toyota&model=Tacoma (PreRunner)

and I got the Nitto Grapplers in 285/70r17

Result: Super happy with everything. One of my biggest concerns was that 3 inches was not enough. Looking at photos, sometimes I could not tell if the truck was actually lifted or not. But when I picked it up there is a clear difference. And, if you go straight from stock tires to this combination then it will be a very big difference. The 285's fill out nicely. They rub just a tiny bit when am at full turn in reverse. But overall, the truck looks much more proportional and honestly, pictures do not do it justice! If anyone wants to go the route I went, I highly recommend it.

    Pricing:
    Lift: $250
    Lift Install: $300 (includes alignment)
    Tires: $208 x 4 - $832 (includes install)
    Credit for old BFGs: $250
    Grand total: $1132

If you are in the Orlando area, Crawford Tire in Ocoee is where I went and they did a great job.

That looks awesome, I have the same scenario as you. I don't go off road much, camping is all. So I went with a Rancho Lift. They don't get a good review on here, but I really like what the lift does for the truck, and the ride is fantastic. All that matters is you like the truck and you could afford what you wanted to do with it. BTW...I'm going with those wheels next...did you order them from the WEB

I actually got them lightly used from a random shop outside of Houston a few years ago.

I'd say just barely. I live off of some super bumpy brick roads and it rides about the same as before.

So does the lift make it so that the 285's clear the upper control arm? I have 285's and it rubs on the UCAs when turning sharp and in reverse if I turn too much

That has nothing to do with lift and everything to do with your wheel specs. Sounds like you need less backspacing

Oh...I am new to the truck/tacoma world. Thanks! I thought that a suspension lift would make it clear.

Welcome! That'll help clear other things like the cab mount, fenders, etc. If you're rubbing the UCA you need some small wheel spacers or new wheels that push the tire out a little more.
