I'm not a professional by any means lol. I just happen to have a Canon and like to take nice pictures with it occasionally.

Yeah I love it, its a fantastic camera. The pics I uploaded really don't do it justice, as a decent amount of quality was lost post-upload.

Canon T4i, just use the lens that came with it, occasionally I'll use a portrait lens

not sure if the Sony a6000 comes in at that price point, but my kid sure loves his and takes great pics with it... hmm, looks a bit over that. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod...ce6000l_b_alpha_a6000_mirrorless_digital.html and if by 'decent zoom' you mean, 'extreme telephoto', then you'd want a 2nd lens. me, I like wide to portrait, which the 16-50 would get you. shooting from far away tends to lead to flat dull pictures, if you can get closer to the subject and use a wider angle lens, you get a much more lively and interesting picture.

Actually that is not always true. Working with varying DOF with a telephoto lens can create some great images. Changing the DOF as well as moving your distance relative to the subject can still produce quite a lively photo. I shoot a large number of model/portrait shots with my 70-200 Canon lens with great results. (i.e. published magazine photos) The below photo ended up as my 2nd magazine cover and was shot with my Canon 6D, and 70-200 lens.

This photo was shot with the same camera and lens combination and was my first cover.

the typical novice uses a long telephoto to take pictures of things from miles away, thats mostly what I was referring to. for sure, for portraiture, focal lenghts of around 80-150mm are optimal. also for taking pictures of cars, the classic 3/4 front shot should be taken from around 50 feet away with a portrait focal length, all 4 wheels should just be visible with the far rear wheel just peeking out under the car behind the front near wheel, and the camera angle should be about level with the lower windshield. wide angle lenses make cars look too bulbous, people too. good for fun shots, however...

See, I don't agree with that about shooting a car that specifically for a 3/4 or a full shot. That creates a cookie cutter photo set. Photography is about telling a story. You need to decide what story you want to tell with a car, and build it from there. Location, angles of shoot, etc... All those are very important. For instance when shooting a exotic car I may choose to make it be in it's element, taking it on a track with a lead vehicle and shooting it from a position of say 5 feet above the hood, and 20 feet in front of it, to get a nice action view with the rest of the background being blurred out. It's all about the story. This is of course just my professional opinion mind you. Everyone has their own style. I tend to be a rule breaker. Sometimes breaking the rules can result in some really incredible photos.
