is this a clutch problem or a compressor problem? Loud foghorn sound under hood and ac light flashing when I turn the air or defrost on.The compressor spins by hand and feels smooth. Any help would be appreciated.

Are you turning the pulley or the clutch by hand?

So it sounds terrible with the compressor on? Sounds like you need a new compressor. Is it purging freon? What are your pressure readings?

When I have someone turn the air on I can watch the compressor slowly turn then it stops and the ac light flashes. It's not purging freon and I haven't checked the pressure yet. I just tried to turn the compressor again and it felt like something is rubbing in the clutch.

If your high side pressure is too high the compressor will purge freon to keep from damaging the system. This sound is really weird. Kinda like an air horn underwater. Get a set of gauges and see what your high and low side is. Did you use one of those fill it yourself cans?

Your compressor may be locking up.

Not sure how old the belt is. I just bought the truck about six months ago.

Is the belt slipping at the compressor? It maybe locking up.

No, it's not slipping. When the clutch try's to kick the compressor on it turns a couple of rounds slowly while making the horn noise and then kicks off. I've got video of it but I can't figure out how to upload it.

I was on my way home from the coast... the outside air temperature was getting hot so I turned on my AC. it blew nothing but hot air... I figured I would have to take it to the shop Monday and get it looked at. I left the AC on and it kept blowing hot air for about 15 minutes until I slowed down to make a turn and then it started blowing cold... whats up with that?

Your clutch or compressor is defective, hard to tell which one without hands on.

If it is acting as described he will not be able to get any proper pressure readings.

The AC light is flashing as the rotation sensor detected that the pulley was not turning when the clutch was energized and faulted turning off the clutch relay.
