As Bebop has pointed out before, you need gauges and knowledge in order to properly charge an a/c system.

Plus, every time you hook up your hoses you can rob refrigerant from the system, and on a system that holds so little refrigerant you can severely affect the system performance . The only true way to know is to extract your refrigerant, pull a <500 micon vacuum for at least thirty minutes, and then weigh the EXACT charge called for on the nameplate back in.

The gauge hoses hold about .25 pounds of freon. You wouldn't believe how much money I make fixing problems caused by people and those stupid cans of freon. I had a guy once with a Honda Civic use 3 of those cans then he found out it wasn't working so he took his battery hold down off and shoved it in one of the Schrader valves and closed the hood down on it to vent it. Dumbass.

This! After this is done, the gauge pressures will help you diagnose any problems there may be.
