Some pics from a recent cross country trip taken with my Nikon 1 J1. Apologies for the photo dump, haven't done any personal build thread post or write up yet.. between phone pics, nikon, and GoPro and three weeks of travel their are lots of pictures to go through. Mix that with coming home to a full time job and house mods lingering haven't had much time. Wish I was still on the road. I was just able to offload the nikon and thought these pics came out pretty crispy.

Hey I'm playing with Gaia on my iPad Air (Wifi only), I noticed the GPS is pretty weak and because of this it wont trace my routes. I suspect either it needs to be mounted somewhere or the GPS on the ipad is weak sauce.

I tried leaving it on the dash on a short commute and nothing. How good is the GPS on yours?

The Wifi only iPads don't have a real GPS chip like the cell service versions. They can't accurately give a position without a network source providing it in conjunction with the onboard GPS.

Thanks, if only there was a way to pair my iPad to the GPS fin on the roof of my truck. This iPad was a gift, but I would have bough the cellular model if I had the choice.

So if I run gaia on my iphone and I loose reception, the GPS will continue to work better than my iPad? Is there a way I can piggy back the GPS on my iphone to my ipad?

I'll check out the garmin glo.

Yeah the GPS isn't dependent on cell signal, but most devices only have a GPS chip for cell versions, I think because the GPS helps to locate it to the nearest cell tower. There's very few WiFi only devices that have real GPS, the Nexus 7 (past first gen) is one of them.

My gps setup is a wifi only iPad my wife won at a company Xmas party and a bad elf chip. @Wheelspinner sent me this link and I was sold https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/maps-me-badelf-gps-on-wifi-only-ipad-mini-a-mini-review.447033/
It works great for navigation especially off grid without cell service. Only issue I have with it is the ETA time is always wayyy off, it adjusts the time as you go tho. Not really an issue. I use google map on my phone during road driving anyway, when I get on trail or forestry road I use the iPad.

Some good info on this forum as always, thanks guys.

After doing some research, I'm leaning towards the Dual XGPS160 mainly because I can potentially mount it on my motorcycles for adventure and my occasional track day. I'm gonna keep reading up on it for now.

The Bad Elf plugin would be my next choice since its small. But I can't find any data on its update rate. The XGPS160 does (10) updates per second according to this reveiw.

My next challenge is finding a mount that sturdy enough for the weight of the iPad while off road. I found this on Amazon, looks like it can be stable, anyone try this yet?

I haven't seen one for the 3rd gen truck yet. I know some on here are working on it, but I would like to avoid drilling into console even though I know in the back of my mind, that is the most stable solution.

Sorry I didn't notice the 3rd gen. I would go with the ram mount that attaches to the passenger seat front bolt.

I have the Tech Deck with RAM ball mounts. You can see my RCA Voyager Pro (not as big as an ipad though). I also have a phone mount below it.
