Lake Mead and Las Vegas was a fun trip... But it's like an oven up there! Also finally got around to replacing the front rotors and pads that were overdue. I decided to go with Duralast Gold rotors and Duralast Max ceramic pads. They were $100 cheaper than the OEM from the dealership and have a lifetime warranty on the pads. Time will tell if it was worth it.

Loving the rack! Been thinking about building my own. If I do anything I'll be building something similar to what you've done!

Out of curiosity, how much does the rack weight?

Thanks and I'm not sure on the weight but it's light enough that I can take them on and off by myself. If I had to guess I'd say the front rack weighs ~40 lbs and the back weighs ~30 lbs give or take. I used 1 1/4 inch mild steel square tubing with .083 thick cross bars and .063 thick sides.

Awesome. Thanks! I think if did anything, I'd build the rack out of aluminum. Just to make it as light as possible.

I would've made it out of aluminum but it was easier/cheaper for me to use steel and weld it together.

I'm not a huge fan of having weight above the roof line since I do mostly rock crawling. Aluminum would be the way to go for me just to save that extra 10lbs.

The Overland Bound Trip from Lake Pleasant to Crown King was awesome. Really got to see how capable this new truck is with even just the rear locker. Only Toyota to represent but the truck did more than hold her own:thumbsup: Came really close to needing sliders but I only bumped the plastic running boards once :D Also the Allpro Expos were the most enjoyed piece of equipment on this trip. They flexed great and handled the fully loaded truck flawlessly. My friend and I ended up camping out and taking the trail all the way back into Prescott. Covered over 80 miles straight offroad!

Sorry for my ignorance, but I was thinking of doing a roof rack like yours. I looked into the frontrunner racks because of the low profile and the weight, but I didn't like the price of it... The L tracks are bolted to the cab through rivnuts, I've never used rivnuts before and just didn't want to be worried about leaking, or anything else. I wasn't sure the depth between the roof and the headliner.

Love your build man, looks amazing.

No problem at all and thanks! I didn't install the rivnuts myself because you need a special tool so I had a local shop here do it. I've had this truck in several down pours and haven't had any leaks yet. the backside of the L track has a foam adhesive to seal it plus when you bolt them on you need to coat the hole with silicone to seal around the screw. If you do that they won't leak!

Hey man, was thinking about starting on my own roof rack, and I think I'm going to go the same route as you with the L track and square tubing. what are the lengths of the l track you used? On the front part of the rack, how much room is between the bottom of the rack and the roof? I was going to add a light bar, hopefully something low profile, and that'll mount under the rack, to give me more light running trails at night. Thanks.

    numbered.jpg

Ok so I took some measurements on the rack and made this picture for reference...

Overall there are 12 sections of L Track...

Numbers 1, 3, 4, and 6 are 9 inches long and have three mounting holes
Number 2 is 5 inches long and has 2 mounting holes
Number 5 is 13 inches long and has 4 mounting holes

I figured the center of the cap fiberglass needed the most support and thats why I went with the longer section there to spread the load even more. I may even put a 13 inch long section over the center of the cab instead of the 5 inch ones because the sheet metal does flex still but its probably not necessary.

The lowest point of clearance between the bottom of the cross bar and the roof is over Crossbar Number 2 and is about 5/8 of an inch at the center. And the rack is about 44 inches wide edge to edge.

Hope this makes sense and helps!
