After searching for an hour, I gave up. If you switch out the steel wheels on an SR, for a set of factory take-off aluminum wheels (TRD's for example), and the TPMS sensors are left in the new wheels, will the computer pick them up?

In my experience, if the wheels have proper sensors they will work but you have to do a reset on the TPMS system to resync. At least that was how it works on my outback.

Thanks....Since take-off wheels/tires are pretty common around here, I can pick up a set of factory Toyota aluminum wheels/tires for a reasonable price, and figured it would be an easy way to upgrade the truck from the steel wheels. I just don't want to get into issues with the TPMS system, or more so, having to un-mount everything which makes the option not so inexpensive.

For my outback I originally just got steel wheels with snow tires but they had to move the sensors back and forth with each rotation and they (discount tire) charged $7/tire each time. Eventually it just pays to buy new sensors. If you get wheels with sensors all the better. However, if I was selling off my wheels I'd probably pull the sensors and put on the new wheels so verify.

The steel sensors are different than the alloy sensors. You will have to flip them 180 and be extremely careful when mounting the tires. The stem angle is NOT the same. I'm dealing with it for now, but may switch sensors when it's time to do tires again.

I understand that the steel wheel sensors have a different valve angle, but if the factory take-off's still have the sensors in them, they'll be picked up by the computer, correct?

Nope, the ECU will need to be reprogrammed.

Needs to be hooked up to obdII and programmed. Local shop should be able to.

Are there compatibility issues from year to year? The reason I ask is that I put factory aluminum wheels on my wife's car, but the dealer was unable to get the sensors recognized by the computer, so the TPMS light is always on. I assume if I stick with wheels from a 2016 or 2017, programming will be a non-issue?
