My experience with non OEM oil filter.

    I usually do my own oil change. I use Mobil 1 synthetic with Toyota oil filter and change the oil a couple hundred miles shy form 5k.
    In the past 2 weeks and for few times when I start the truck after it has been off for few hours. I was hearing loud ticking for about 2-3 seconds. My guess was it is most likely due to starvation of oil. Since the oil level was right, so I suspected that it must be the filter.
    I had 4700miles on that last oil change and I used K&N oil filter at that time cause I changed the oil over the weekend and my dealer was closed. Got it from Walmart, I did a quick search and was highly recommended and that 1 inch nut in top was a cool idea. Also, it was almost double the price if the oem filter.
    Long story short when I took it out I noticed that the rubber seal inside it was kind of waivy. Put new oil with oem filter and never heard the ticking at the start up again.
    Anyone had similar experience?
    With k&n or other brands?
    My brother is a mechanic and he told that since our filter sits up right, I need a filter that does not have a valve in it cause a filter with a valve needs a high pressure to open and having a filter in that position would require few second to get the pressure right.
    Any thought on that?

    shitty backflow valve.... this is why you dont use KnN anything (other than their Power Kleen degreaser which is awesome)... but anything regarding filtration (oil or air) stay FAR FAR AWAY

    I've been using nothing but FRAM Tough Guard filters on my truck (same with my dad's 99 4Runner) and have never had an issue.

    Youtube oil filter tests and you will be surprised. Some of the popular ones are cheap, I prefer Wix. Anyway, watch and make your own decision. It's an education.
    TW is a great resource.

    Ah yes a FRAM hater. Keep believing the urban myths because that means more FRAM for the rest of us.

    I'm serious. If you have some incorrect notion about FRAM quality.. then you need to get with the times.

    I will trust what I have found when cutting them in half. I prefer WIX or OEM but I hope you continue to get good service out of them.

    K&N used to be a good filter; I read quality wend downhill when some, or all?, started being manufactured in China. The problem with OEM filters is Toyota can change manufacturers any time. Purolator and Wix claim holders of patents for the modern day spin-on oil filter - you can't go wrong with either one.

    Below is what I have in my garage at the moment (I buy extra ones to meet my purchasing quota on Amazon Prime...):
    Royal Purple 20-400; made in US; for the Taco
    $10 Purolator PL20195 ONE Advanced Engine Protection Spin On Oil Filter Blue
    Purolator PL20195 - blue; made in US; for the Taco
    Purolator PL30001 - blue; made in US; larger filter I will start using on the Taco
    Wix 51516; made in US; got for Taco but will install on the Camry
    Baldwin B243; made in US; got for Taco but will install on the Camry
    Toyota OEM 90915-YZZF1; made in Thailand; for the Corolla (bought a case; will not re-purchase)
    $14 Wix 57047XP XP Cartridge Lube Metal Free Filter, Pack of 1
    Wix 57047XP; made in Poland; for the Lexus
    Baldwin P7398; made in South Korea; for the Lexus (these were dirt-cheap on Zoro)

    I have also read all the gloom and doom about Fram Oil Filters and I did use them for decades and never had a single issue from any of them.

    My personal opinion from my own experience is that they are fine filters as long as you change them at the defined interval. Much of what has been published is hogwash purely based of my few decades using them.

    I have been using Toyota and Mobil filters over the last 8 years and they are also great filters IMO.

    OP your K&N filter either did not have a flow back valve or it was defective...

    I used Fram filters for a long time, never had an issue. With my last two cars, a 2005 Toyota Corolla and a 2009 Lexus ES350, I use the factory Toyota filter.

    For my Tacoma (when I buy it) I'll buy a case (10 or 12) of filters so I always have one if my dealer is ever closed so I don't have to resort to going to a parts store.

    OEM is the way to go.

    Think about it; Toyota doesn't want them to fail and then have to pay out on a warranty claim if the engine dies due to a cheap $5 part. I buy 4 at a time from the dealer for $20, and I'm good for 30,00 miles worth of oil changes.

    Since the first oil change, and each oil change after that, I have used the TRD oil filters and Mobil 1. Since the truck is not driven a lot each year, the added cost is not a factor. No complaints on the filters or the oil.

    Yes, I know that Toyota will have 'specs' for the filters that accompany the bid. So will every other OE that sells branded filters.

    Every OE cares about their warranty period and filter quality. I'd bet you a nice smoked mullet dinner that the industry standard across the OEs is so similar that one manuf. can meet everyone's filtration spec with the same media.

    Let's be clear. I'm not saying anything against them. But just because someone painted them black and printed Toyota on them doesn't make them the gold standard of filtration either.

    Years ago Fram used to be a good brand. Then when Allied Signal moved production overseas QC went to shit. Used to race CBR600s in the 90's. The Fram filters started blowing off the engines. They wouldn't let you on the track if you had a Fram filter on. Haven't used on since. Oh,and OEM filter for my truck.

    I see that many people here like Fram. I used Fram a while ago on my Hondas and never had any problem.
    On my Tacoma I always used Toyota except for this time as I mentioned above.
    I have an extended warranty and for that reason I would use Toyota oem parts. Simply because I don't want the dealer for example to use it against me if something happened.
