i can understand not liking FS bikes. im not a big fan myself although i own 2. if your only riding 5 times a year up there id just rent a bike. if your looking for a good dh bike i might know someone selling one in amarillo but it would be a actual dh bike.

It's a good bike for the price. It would be good on any moderate trail.

don't listen to the negs. If you want that bike, it'll go downhill fine. SLOPPY RIDERS might require full squish.
by sloppy I mean not able to ride the bike to the terrain as it requires based on the type of bike it is.

But if you have trials skill and finesse (or just don't slam it off drops) the bike is fine. it just takes a ton more work
to protect the bike from huge hits if you drive the bike as though it has full suspension. You need to ride it
differently to make it last. that means 'not the same drops or lines' or 'if the same lines, you better have the
physical kung-fu to pick your way through' like a trials rider and float that bike down so you don't break it.

hell, I'll take any $1000 bike down anything, I just will do it differently than joe-schmo on his 10,000 DH specific rig, But
I'll make it, and have fun, and my bike will still be in one piece.

i've looked at several. none really fit what i'm wanting to accomplish. i'd like to keep the same standards as my v2 bronson, so boost rear axle, 27.5 wheels, and if it's a prebuilt bike a boost fork. this will give me the option of swapping wheels around, or upgrading parts on the bronson and handing the parts down to the hardtail.

Yeah. I've been wanting to get further out for riding. I've hit raccoon and sewanee as my furthest trips from home. I've got 3 kids and have a hard time getting away for a whole day. The guy I normally ride with has 4.

Actually that's a lie. Alafia was the furthest. The other 2 were day trips. Alafia was a vacation. I gotta get a locking rack for our van so I can take my bike to Florida again.

here is the Inventor in Taiwan as I write this, building the first two bikes for destructive testing

Hope I am not breaking the thread ruiles by posting the 'birth of my bike'
but ...these are the bikes that have a characteristic that makes reviewers say:

"Send the Meltdown to finishing school, add a better component selection and a more sophisticated fork and shock, and I think it has the potential to take on the big guys. Brian Berthold's Missing Link is proof that there actually is significant room for improvement among the present crop of all-mountain trail bikes"

Brian (in the pic above) is in finishing school (the taiwan factory),
and the component selection is better....for my build is DVO Topaz and DVO Diamond, not the ghastly X-fusion parts the reviewers were riding back in 2016.

2016 Specialized StumpjumperFSR Comp Carbon 29. New Pike, Guide Ultimates, 1X Carbon X0 cranks, Syntace Carbon bar, Carbon MRP Chain Guide, Industry Nine Trails with Torch hubs, Maxxis rubber, Ergon SME3 stealth saddle. Can store quite a bit inside the frame behind water bottle like a tube and a pump... multitool is integrated into frame above rear shock. Paint is a translucent Navy Blue. You can see all the carbon weaves. Pretty fun ride and I built it in my garage frame up. 28lbs 9oz.

White bike is my hardtail 2015 Stumpy. It actualy says Specialized on the downtube in a matte white finish. Like the color combo. 24lbs.

Blue bike pics are just after a wash after a day at Killington Bike Park. Hit Killington and Thunder Mt this month and I have never had more fun on a bike!

Oh yeah, bike nearly matches the color of my Tacoma.

Seems kinda heavy for the build out on the fsr. Nice build either way. Im riding a Specialized Carbon Epic hardtail Ive put just over 120 miles on it in 5 rides. I dig it but its being replaced by a much lighter carbon frame from Niner that will get I9 wheels later if Onyx doesnt come thru for me. Ive ridin a Pike on a 27.5+ Jet 9 RDO and was really happy with but it seems like a lot of fork for a xc bike. Do you need 130mm where you ride?

In NY we have all sorts of trails for 130mm bikes and then we have the ski resorts and local aggressive trails where 140+ is the norm. we also have plenty of XC trails and the 90mm hard tail is fun for that. I would not call a 27.5+ tired bike an XC bike, it is more of a playful trail bike so the Pike 130 would be appropriate. I think XC is more about light weight, steep head angles, minimal suspension and long climbs with fun descents. A carbon Epic Hardtail would be a 2017 as that is the first year of Epic hardtails. That is almost the lightest bike frame in the world. Sounds like a total xc race bike. The Niner will be great with 130 and the 27.5+ will make for a grippy and more plush ride.

Weights are tricky as 28.5 lbs is definitely heavy compared to the XC bikes that can be under 20lbs. Agreed. My Stumpjumper fsr in size Large (above) has a carbon frame with an aluminum rear triangle. It's a 150mm fork. The 2.5 Minion on the front is half a pound heavier than the same 2.3 Minion. I just like the bigger tire for the harder hits and extra traction. At nearly 28 1/2 lbs, that is very light for a full suspension aggressive all mountain rig of any brand or material, period. That weight includes pedals, where most publicized weights do not. The bike weighed 32lbs without pedals when new. A $9,000 2017 Stumpjumper fsr SWORKS (think TRD Pro model:) full carbon frame, triangle and carbon wheels comes in at 28lbs 14oz with NO pedals.

Here are my Transitions. 2016 Suppressor built up 27.5 and my 2016 TR500. Only difference is that both have different saddles.

Just got back from 6 days in Whistler and the big bike was a blast up there.
