Hey guys, Ive had two 2nd gens with the 4.0 v6 and I've been happy with their motors (even coming from half ton v8 trucks).

Now I'm looking at a first gen with the 3.4 v6 and I'm wondering how it stacks up. Will I be unhappy with it on the freeway? I admit I can have a lead foot at times and it drives me crazy to have a car with bad acceleration (like the first gen 4cyl I had).

If you've gone from a first gen to a 2nd gen or vice versa, what did you think about the 3.4 v6?

I drove around an '01 3.4 for awhile while I still had my 4.0 s/c. The 3.4 is a great engine and does everything it needs too. It'll downshift more on uphills and won't tow as well, but it gets out of its own way just fine. The 1st gen trucks are smaller than 2nd & 3rd so it doesn't take as much grunt to move it.

I noticed the 3.4 made me a less aggressive driver too, which is probably a good thing.

Thanks, thats what I was hoping. Im sure having your 4.0 sc made it a bigger difference too. I won't be towing much of anything so Im not too concerned with that aspect.

3.4 is fine everywhere except in big grade areas. 4.0 gets the same mpg' with 45 more hp. That 45 more hp is nice . First gen 3.4 are tried and true engines.

    I have a 2nd gen 4.0 and my gf's truck is a 1st gen 3.4
The 4.0 is faster but the 3.4 gets around just fine. Stock gears and 33" tires makes it drop a gear pretty quick to get enough power for steep grades otherwise it's fun to drive.

Awesome thanks man! I had a first gen with a 4 cyl while I was building my 2nd gen and I liked the truck but the 4cyl made me not keep it long term.

Imo the 3.4 Is very very slow. But it's meant for torque not hp

Come drive my heavy double cab 01 2.7L gimpomatic, it will show you what "slow" means...

It makes the 3.4 seem like a pagani zonda ...

Working on it, dissent offroad racks, shift sense pro, pedal commander , ARB twin, rigid SS dually's , dual batteries, ARB fridge , 2.5 Fox coil overs wResi , 2.5 Fox rears w resi Total chaos UCA , deaver packs , Nitto trail grappler's 33" .
I had a 04 DBLCSB it did not have a supercharger as its previous owner sold it just prior to me buying. It was heavily modded with lift 33" tire's the works and it drove great! Had plenty of power with the stock 3.4.
Of course I put a new SC on it after a bit :)!!
    Now I have a 17 and :) it does great :)!!!

A 22RE automatic with the A/C on will make your 2.7L auto feel like a Pagani Zonda.

Ok so I pulled the trigger on the 1st gen with 3.4 v6 heres my impressions:

The 4.0 v6 is a much more powerful motor in all honesty and it is a quick motor

The 3.4 v6 is not a slow motor but the 4.0 is more powerful, however, the 3.4 is just right, its not slow to where I regret getting it, it still accelerates well and can cruise at high speeds. Overall good motor for my initial impressions. This is with bigger tires (265, not quite 33's and an arb bumper).

The best way to describe the 3.4 like someone said above is like a tractor seems like a great motor offroad for crawling and such. Im a fan so far. But will admit that the 4.0 is more powerful.

The 3.4 does laps around the 4 cylinders in the first gen.

I've only driven a few 2nd gens with the 4.0 but my impression is that stock for stock, they feel about the same. The 2nd gen Tacos are heavier trucks and the added HP makes up for that. The 3.4l v6 is the perfect motor for the 1st gens. 4cyl's have legendary reliability but the 3.4l has proven to be a classic Toyota motor that is bulletproof as well.

Both engines love boost btw :burnrubber:
