The spacers are just washers in the TSB. I thought about trying this with just stacking 2 hardened washers I have laying around but haven't gotten around to it.

I thought someone would check driveline angles one day and report back if shimming the carrier bearing might help.

Edit: I remember talking myself out of shimming the carrier bearing because I have no driveline vibration and didn't want to introduce one.

I noticed the loud howling on deaccelaration and light feathering of the gas between 50-60 mph on the day after I bought the truck. Gas pedal vibration was horrible, like a tuning fork. Rear diff is found to have metal shavings at 200 miles. It was not leaking fluid. So my 1week old truck had its rear diff replaced. Now the gas pedal vibration is acceptable. The howling noise is improved but still unacceptable between 52-56mph. I took it back to the dealership. They could not hear it. I go to the dealer and drive it with the tech. I reproduce the sound for them. We drive the other Tacomas on the lot and they all sound like mine did before the rear diff was replaced. Terrible. This NJ dealership has a lot full of bad trucks for sale. They know there bad trucks. There they sit on the lot for sale. I d not understand how they sell these trucks like this. Toyota is evil.
I have a case opened with toyota and am told this noise is normal for the truck. I am sorry, its 2017. Not NORMAL. I do believe the noise is quieter on warm days. On days
above 85 degrees it is quieter. So I am taking it back to the dealer in the fall.

well boys im out. Sold the truck today. I bought it a year and half ago in AZ for ~32k and the local SoCal dealer just offered to buy it for 31k, no trade in.

    Good luck to you all.

@smitty99 - SoCal isnt too far away if you decide you cant take it anymore ;), might get a better deal than selling it in AZ. I'll buy you a beer for your woes if you ever make it out this way.

Hope you all get this resolved as well as any other common issues you suffered with for this long.

I took mine in for 10k service and listed the howling diff, leaf springs, and a clank in my suspension to be looked at.

They called me prior to starting work and said they aren't going to address the diff or leaf springs, albeit they are commonly reported problems. They said they would have to reschedule me once they have directive from Toyota on a fix.

I was shopping Tundras last weekend.

The dealer here in Texas offered me 30k for mine. I got them down to 41k on a 2017 limited 4x4 tundra.

Not a bad deal, but I was looking for 31k on the trade.

decided i didn't want payments anymore and heavily weighed whether i actually needed a truck. I made the decision to buy 2 used vehicles for about half the price of the Tacoma, paid in full, no payments.

I got a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, manual trans, with the 4.0 Inline 6 to fulfill my offroad/around town needs and a 2000 mazda miata LS, manual trans, for daily driving/autocross. The miata looks, well you know, but wow that car is fun to drive.

It is nice to be back in vehicles with proper throttle control (i.e. a throttle cable), there is no funny engine braking, there is beautiful low end torque, there are no howling differentials, and both of them combined were a hell of a lot cheaper. Im back to doing my own maintenance and missing out on free donuts but I'll manage. My last vehicle was a 2002 and was perfectly fine technology and comfort wise. In the end, I just couldn't justify spending the money I did on the Tacoma for what I got/had to deal with.

I'm interested to see what the dealer lists the '16 for. I asked, but he told me to not even think about it, that I would be crushed when I saw what it went for. I'm completely happy with what I got, I expected at least a couple grand less than that and it only took 10 minutes to walk in and get rid of it. Hope the new owner is partially deaf or Toyota comes out with a fix for their "normal operating vehicle" for the new owner's sake.

As a side note, it did come down to either the miata or a truck. In terms of the truck, I would have gone with a 1st gen tacoma 4 banger or a late 90s, maybe earlier 2000's ranger (post timing chain guide issue era). I just don't haul too much stuff, so I decided against the truck as a daily driver this time around.

I'm in SoCal, which dealer? PM me if you want to keep it hush-hush. I have one friend who's looking for a pre-owned one. That way, he'll avoid it.

Well, good for you, you got out from under something that you couldn't live with anymore and got something else you like. I liked my taco, but tired of issues so I traded and am happy now. Mine was listed for more than I paid new, so you probably don't want to know how much they get for it, lol.

Yeah I'm content with it. I took what I feel is an acceptable loss and it took 10 minutes of my time. The loss amount was worth not having to find a buyer myself.

One interesting thing though is that a non Toyota dealership offered me 27 for it, same day, same area. So if anyone is considering selling or trading in, definitely give Toyota a shot compared to another dealerships offer for trade-in/buy.

I believe 31k was the top of the spectrum on kbb trade in, with 32.6 or so being private party. And I know how many used private party buyers love to quote kbb so I'm unsure how much more I would have gotten for it privately, unless I was willing to keep it on the market for a while which I couldn't do at this time.

Have there been any reports of noisy differentials on 4Runners?

Not that I know of. There have been a couple of owners that had some things go wrong, one guy had both diffs get replaced, but those few are not the usual traffic I read about.

Has Toyota figured out the root cause of this? The frequency matched the ring and pinion tooth meshing. It seems like the backlash changes (probably tighter during feathered throttle, and then the backlash open up under forward or backward load). This could be caused by some unwanted play in the carrier or pinion bearing/ adjuster that shows up after a few thousand miles of wear and tear/ heat cycles. It is interesting that the majority of complaints come after a few thousand mile are on the axle. Seems like something is loosening up.

When they had replaced mine, it started again within 30 miles. Slowly got louder and audible over a wider speed range over the next 14k miles.

Toyota "fixed" my second one by telling me the noise is normal for the new Tacoma.

Maybe we will see the new owner of my truck here :anonymous:

Mine started right around 300 miles and got louder, the volume leveled off but the range of speed is wider now and closing in on 4000 miles.

After 5k mine is getting louder as the miles grow. I'm considering trading it in for something else.
