I am picking up a 2017 Off Road and am curious as to any electronics issues anyone may have had. We are looking at extended warranty and wondering if it is worth it. My wife is concerned with all of the electronics in the truck which is why I am asking.

    Thanks

Electronics are generally good to go on Asian vehicles. I'm an import tech, I hardly ever see electrical problems on asian cars, if I do, it's usually something dumb the owner did.

    Instrument clusters being replaced

All in warranty periods. Not isolated, but not recall levels either.

    So a couple of thoughts.

Buying an financing an extended warranty is a sure fire profit maker for the dealership. Right there is a warning sign that the odds are in your favor.

You're under no obligation to buy it from the selling dealership. Folks shop that all the time and find much better deals.

Remember you are buying an extension. So if you buy an 8/100 for example, you're really only buying a 5/64 extension to your std 3/36.

Forgot about rodent damage, definitely a major cause of electrical faults.

Which will not be covered under warranty of any type.

'Maybe' your insurance, but not warranty.

And yes, it can be devastating!

Toyota's in general are very good on their electronics. Unlike jeeps any other ram/dodge vehicles where even changing out bulbs can cause all sorts if issues. I sell/install 12V accessories and it's a joy installing stuff on a Toyota.

A mouse ate the wires in my Tundra and my insurance paid for it, it was a fight though

I did have a customer with a 2015 acura IIRC, needed a complete new engine harness, due to squirrels. Insurance did eventually cover it.

    Yeah.
Someone once said, if they are trying to sell it to you, you probably don't need it. That's a standard line, like "it has 36 computers on it." Usually with electronics, if something goes wrong, it usually goes wrong early. If it lasts through the standard warranty period it is good to go. Failure after that is usually due to something else happening (like bad power, improper cooling, usually due to something the owner does as someone mentioned).

I bought the extended warranty ... fell for the line about "all the electronics" ... I suspect Toyota trains their F&I guys to push it that way. First and only extended warranty I ever got in 40 years of buying cars. Shoulda put the money into sliders :) Mine's a 2016, hopefully it's fixed for good now, but do watch out for the random trip odometer resets. It's easy to miss that depending on what defaults you have set on the dash, and it does require a hardware replacement which I assume wouldn't be covered if it happened (or you didn't notice it) after 36K miles. I am just over 35K miles on mine with no other electrical problems, except a blown fuse for the center console outlet when it was almost new.

I think it is funny, the salesman sells you on how reliable toyotas are, then the finance person sells you on how unreliable they are. And a lot of people believe both.

I wouldn't be concerned personally. Once in a blue moon something happens to someone's something (except the cps, which was covered by recall anyway), but vehicle electronics usually are quite stout. Ecus have been in just about every vehicle for over 20 years. They are still holding up fine on the old girls.

If your trip meter randomly resets, get it fixed under warranty. Had mine replaced last fall and have not had any random resets since. Post #350 on this thread has a copy of the TSB.

The service advisor suggested that I make a single appointment for trip odometer and crank sensor (mines on the recall list for the latter) when the CPS parts are ready.

The extra warranties and stuff is where they make their real profit at the dealer. I skipped it, I'd do the same again.

I just said: "Nope! If I want one, I'll get it from corporate before my standard warranty ends."

He realized he had no chance on selling me and quickly changed topics.

Unfortunately, my phone has been getting hit up from warranty places since my purchase. I'm not happy on that front.

Toyota radios are the only big problem, they can be quite expensive and often aren't covered by even its own extended warranty, maybe ask them if the radio is covered. Otherwise I wouldn't bother with a Tacoma getting extended.
