Looks fine to me, can't expect it to have bright new fluid inside especially seeing as how it ended up as a donor.

Is that why the transfer case has an extra section to it? It looks different than the 6 cyl complete tranny assemblies.

I thought so. I mean there is a slight difference, but a really really minuscule difference. I have the tranny slanted forward on my crane so I can drip all the residual ATF from the tranny into the pan so I can get some kind of sample from the inside. I don't want to open up the pan until I get the OK from the scrapper.

So I tried getting some kind of residual ATF from the pan but this was fluidless. They really drained it out good at the scrapper.

Guess the only way now is to drop the pan. I'll give them a call when they open tomorrow.

There is no gasket on the pan from the factory. Blue permeate is used. There is an aftermarket gasket offered.

It'll likely be fine, most idiots never drain their autos anymore, so it's probably never been serviced. But you need to make sure the your research that torque converter back in the pump correctly or it will not function long. @gearcruncher any tips for seating an a340 torque converter fully?

It does make sense. Donor truck only had 150k miles so I wasnt too worried. The torque converter came attached to the tranny when they loaded it on my truck. Somewhere along the trip home it fell off the shaft and on the bed of my truck. I can hear something rattling inside hope that's nothing bad.

Here's another sample from the torque converter. Everytime I drain it more fluid accumulates.

You need to mix up a strong drink and step away from this transmission. You are working yourself up unnecessarily.

Your concerns are valid, but there is not much more you can do beyond installing it and running it with new fluid.

Get it installed and run the thing.

You're right. I just really don't want to drive the 12 hour roundtrip back to the place I bought it from so I hope it's fine.

Just remember, recyclers do not want to put questionable parts into their inventory. They do not want to have to give you another unit. If they had any doubt that it wasn't a good running part, it would have gone directly to the scrap pile.

this. The transmission you bought is fine. Dirty fluid is normal and not always a good indicator so don't get worked up.

like stated many times above it should be ok. The issue is not so much the fluid as the crap that has settled into the nooks and crannies inside the trans. If it is not disturbed and is still sitting there a fluid change should be just fine. When the small clumps are broken free and settle to the bottom of the pan then get sucked into the filter screen there is a potental for blockage or some getting past and binding the spool valves... these passages have a very, very fine clearance.

Just got off the phone with the scrapyard and the manager who sold the tranny to me. He basically confirmed everything you guys said (the owner may have not regularly changed it, just have it flushed, etc.) he gave me the okay to pop off the pan and break the warranty seals to inspect so I will be doing that right now. Stand by for pictures.

Here's what it looks like inside. Some magnetic flakes but they're almost minuscule.
