You can see in this video, about 3:20 time mark that the only insulation is a rubber hanging sheet. I was wondering if the sound comes in from the rear air vents but the mat covers them up.

But there is also a seat to drown out the noise as well. Heck, I had a 1970 Ford truck with a gas tank under the seat and no insulation to be found anywhere in the truck and still couldn't hear my rear diff howling like my Taco does.

I had the manual transmission heat shield tsb done as well, it didn't do anything for the howling. I would plan to bring it back afterwards.

I couldn't agree more, but I'm going to let them do their thing.
I'll let them know I'm taking it out for a test drive to check and will be back straight away if (when) the noise is still there.

I got p'd and emailed Jim Lentz and Akio Toyoda over this. Their office wants to discuss in person as opposed to email this Thursday. I'll keep everyone posted but I'm not so sure I expect anything other than get your vehicle checked by the nearest dealer but we will see. At some point we may need to decide if we all want to fight individual fights or team up and consider a class action. Depending on the response I get and depending on whether or not a fix is coming soon, I may take action. This is beyond ridiculous.

I'm curious, are any Pro owners complaining of the howling rear diff?

Hey guys I'm new to the group. I found this thread. My truck also does the how and was one quart low from the factory. Toyota claims it is "normal" and won't do a thing about it. Corporate even blew me off. Kinda sketchy like they know it will cost them millions and they don't want to address the issue. I think it would be great to pursue this as a group. I know tat regearing to 4.88s solves the issue. Clearly they don't have the gears properly setup.

I'm talking to Lentz's office tomorrow. We will see what happens. I don't want to stir it up but I'm tired of mine doing this crap. To their credit I have not taken mine in yet but once I do they better get it fixed. Lemon Law them if you need to. Just get someone at a local gearing shop to tell you it's not normal, get a statement from them stating such and why, and go after them. The key on these is to never give up. I'm not sure I can find it and would be very hesitant to post it on TW but I wrote a literal dissertation on LL and factory buyback strategies on TFL (I think) some time ago. Best of luck and lets all keep each other up to date. Honestly, I just want a fix for this like everyone else I'm sure.

So I can pursue lemon law even though they won't make any attempts to fix it and document it as normal? Because I definitely will. I can't stand that a company would treat loyal hardworking customers like this.

Take it back each time and have your concern noted. Take it back as many times as is required under LL and yes. Yes you can. Google Steve Lehto and lemon law. Now, my approach is different than his because he is a LL only lawyer. He gives some good advice but he is wrong when he says you never get anywhere with those 800 corporate numbers. You can but it is not easy and you have to know that every word you say is recorded and they are always trying to gain your trust to get you to say something they can later use against you. You have to be prepared for the long haul and do not stop. Just because they say they are done, keep emailing them. Email everyone. Nonstop.

Edit: I suck at recalling names so I fixed the name to Steve Lehto, not Jared. Makes perfect sense to me...

Has anyone tried dynamat behind the rear seat? I wonder if the rear needs a harmonic dampener like Ford had to do for some trucks. I'm not giving up on it that's for sure.

I would talk to a lawyer about it if you are serious. People here won't really know.

I would guess you'd have a case, but a lawyer could tell you the best approach to get resolution.

Yeah I don't want anything else, just a quiet rear end haha. Not like another tacoma could replace mine since so many of them have issues, if not all of them and some people just have bad hearing. If i buy another truck it be a Cummins Diesel or the Wrangler truck when it comes out.

I was able to hear mine all around and even through the side windows with them down at highway speeds. I don't know if some dynamat in the back would help, I wouldn't think it would help much.

The first thing you need to do is read your state's LL. What I told you about the repair attempts is universally true. I am not giving free legal advice although we have a few lawyers on this forum, me included. I have been practicing for almost 20 years and have had several cars replaced or bought back over the years. Your new truck info should also have a LL booklet in it. You can read a summary of your LL guide there. I can tell you that lawyers love LL because they get fees. They will discourage you from utilizing the 800 number often stating it will not do you any good. I got all of mine replaced utilizing that 800 number as a regular Joe. I did have to use my lawyer hat with GM last year to get my Yukon XL replaced and it worked well. A buyback can sometimes be better than a LL claim because it win win for all. You the the crappy vehicle out of your hair and corporate gets a late model used vehicle that they can sell and do not have to disclose it as a lemon. They greatly prefer this. If you fight hard enough, and you should, they often waive the mileage penalty. I had it waived all 4 times I did it for myself. Each manufacturer has a buy back department and once they get the go ahead they want the deal closed as soon as possible so use this as leverage to get the mileage waived. GM was calling me almost daily once they got approval for buy back and the mileage waiver was easy as pie. I also got a more expensive car and those costs were waived too.

See the link below from Steve Lehto. I do not always agree with his strategies (understand why he takes his position) but he is dead on regarding the repair attempts. Just get it documented by the dealer why you were there to meet the requisite repair visits. Think about this, every manufacturer could strategically avoid LL claims by just refusing to work on a repair the ---time you came in if this was all they had to do is say we can't help you.

TRD Offroad 4x4 build date 2/2017. My rear end whined when new. Got progressively worse By 4000 miles I took it to Tuscaloosa Toyota. They checked it and ordered a rear end and had it replaced within 3 days. The new rear end has the same whine from 55 to 65. I called today and service manager said that Toyota has acknowledged that this is an issue and has a fix coming out in the next few weeks. They will call when they get the fix in and I can bring my truck in for rework. Appears this problem is in all rear ends. Hope this fix works. Shiftsense Pro made my transmission shifting bearable. If rear end fix works I may keep my Tacoma
