I went out with the wife yesterday just to browse for a potential second Jeep. They didn't have anything I liked on the lot, so we started to head home. When we drove by the Toyota dealership, the Quicksand Taco's caught our eye. We love tan rigs (her Jeep is Dune), and I've always had a secret guilty pleasure for how cool the 3rd gen Taco looks, though I NEVER once considered owning one. I've been daily driving squarebody Chevy's since I started driving, and I never thought I'd DD something newer than those. Anyway, we got home, walked the dogs, and saw a sweet squarebody Chevy outside some dude's house, with a beautiful 3rd gen Taco in his driveway, and my wife was like, "see, you can rock both".

Then it happened. My brain started rapidly thinking about how different it would be of me to DD and build up a truck like this. I became quickly obsessed with the idea, and was on this forum looking at photos for no more than about an hour before I was telling my wife we should head back to Toyota. I knew Toyota would be closed by the time we got back, so I was expecting only to look through the windows of the locked trucks on their lot just to satisfy my craving. Long story short, they were closed but still there helping another customer, and from when I got there at 730 to when I drove off the lot at 2300 in my 2017 Ouicksand DCLB TRD OR, I became a total Taco junkie.

Immediate plans are to make all chrome black and color match the rear bumper inserts. I know tons of guys have done this, but suggestions for the best methods are welcome. I really do wish I had the sunroof package, but it is what it is. Also, do they make an OEM tonneau cover for the long bed? My dealer told me they don't. And I'm thinking the red letter General Grabber's would look good on this truck, anyone seen someone running them with the Quicksand?

Looking forward to being a member of the forum. Now, here are some photos...

Welcome to the forum, and congrats for choosing the best color of the bunch! Yes they make an OEM cover, check the classified section here or Craigslist. Color matched spray paint.

Where do you get the color matched spray paint? Dealer only? How did you do the tailgate letters?

Tailgate letters are raised from Tufskinz. I had vinyl stickers on there first but the raised letters look lots better.

X2 on those Tufskinz - they are super easy to install and look great. Even I couldn't screw up the install and that's saying something.

It was a mix of there only being one salesman still there that was trying to help a couple other customers (they were closed, but I got 10/10 service from them, IMO) + me not knowing anything about the Tacoma or what I wanted (besides the color) and test driving two different trucks.

Thanks, definitely ordering the Tufskinz. Did you bother with the clear coat and/or primer for your bumper inserts? Did you sand the chrome down? Are your door badges pastidipped?

My bumper came color matched but yes you need to prep the chrome before you paint to ensure good adhesion. Get automotive primer that says self etching on the can. And when you buy the paint order their gloss clear coat. The door badges are Rust-oleum peel coat matte black item number 276779. The grille was painted black with Rust-oleum Trim & Bumper paint item number251574 also matte black. By the way if you have a safe take your wallet and lock it in there until the excitement subsidies in a month or two!

    Good story and well written.
Sounds like you found a dealership that actually has some customer service.
I can't tell you how many dealers I know of that close despite having customers walking around on the lots.

    Your square body looks clean.
Your wallet is going to burn now that your on the forums.

@rrentrop can get you all the vinyl inserts.yes they make a oem cover for the long bed. Try @gunny1005 he works for camelback Toyota. Or keep EYE open here and other places like facebook market place, offer up, let go, Craigslist, etc. Welcome to TW. My guess is that these other vehicles will now sit in the driveway for a long while. Lol

You can either dip or change the grill if you're not a fan of the shiny stock OR grill.

I prefer the Pro grill myself.20170721_074924.jpg

My iPhone messaging has been a little wonky. It worked fine the first couple days, then I think it stopped displaying message alerts on the screen, and now they've come back but "read" is greyed out. From what I've gathered from searching, this is kind of common, but I haven't found a solution.

When I went to pick up my taco back in October 2016 I spent from exactly 9 am right when they finished their staff meeting till 3 pm when I finally sat in the truck and drove home it takes a while
Making me truly regret not getting a QS taco instead, enjoy it man!
