I have 100% electric EVEN HEAT (but use a wood stove) so our monthly electric is $250 to $300 year round! As far as stove goes...I got a weber genesis with a side burner for power outages...works great

 

Sounds like mine. It's only about 30 feet deep, but the water level's never dropped below 15 feet or so since we've been there. Even during that ridiculous dry spell that we had last year we always had a ton of reserve capacity.

Ouch.

Power outages aren't a big problem for us during the winter, since we heat with wood and we've also got the old wood-burning cookstove w/reservoir for cooking on and for hot water. But for outages during the summer it takes a long time to boil a pot of water for dishes (or humans) on the side burner of the grill. And cooking in a pouring rain becomes annoying, lol.

I have to replace my well pump eventually because it has a very slow leak. I'm worried about priming it, but this spring I pulled the cover off the well the water level was higher than the pipe going into the house. Guess that would make priming a non-issue.

I think it is a little lower now.

 

Where's the leak? Just a check valve that lets it bleed back, or is the pump itself leaking out into the cellar? Because a check valve is an easy swap, and you can rebuild those pumps pretty easily.

The 'crazy survivalist' in me actually kind of likes having a shallow well; I've got a hand pump rigged up the basement for when we lose power, which wouldn't work with a deep drilled well. When the power goes out I just shut the valve on the pipe going to the electric pump and open the valve on the pipe going to the hand pump. Prime the hand pump once and we're in business.

The pipe connections into the cast iron housing appears to be where the water comes from. The housing has rusted badly, though, so I want to try to replace everything. I honestly think that's a lot of where the iron in my water comes from, assuming the inside looks anything like the outside.

 

I'd be surprised if you were getting much iron leaching into the water from the cast iron in the pump housing; cast iron is really, really slow to corrode. The water would have to be sitting in there for quite a while to pick up anything.
Now, iron bacteria on the other hand...those little buggers are a pain. They can really build up in a hurry, and they look like iron stains/deposits. You can kill them off with chlorine, though.

I had to do this with my well when we first moved in. I pumped the well down as low as I could get it using the pump in the house and a borrowed sump pump, then poured the shock treatment in. Once the well had filled back up a little bit I pumped the solution into every pipe in the house, then let sit for 12 hours and drained everything out and emptied the well again. Haven't had any problems with them since.

Interesting. I'm wondering if that's what it is. The first filter turns red within a day or two and there is loads of what looks like rust on the pump housing. The second filter takes two months to start looking bad (they are in line with one another).

 

It's a strong possibility. Either that or you've got a mild steel fitting in the bottom of your well that's in pretty rough shape

 

I just assumed my pump housing was made of the same stuff old Tacoma frames are!

 

Sure. It'll be a couple days before I get to it though.

I'm pretty sure the Onkyo is a TX-SR707. The fix is replacing 3 capacitors on the board.

I'm not sure what model the older one is.
