Monitoring trans temp and other parameters

I've been reading the trans temp threads for the 2nd gens and have become interested to do the same for my 02 DC 4cyl pre runner

I can't seem to find one that works for 1rst gens !! . is there anything available I can use plus monitors/measures other parameters of my 4cyl while driving ??

Can't remember which mfg but one type of gauge if installed on our 1rst gens would turn on the ABS lite . You would need to rewire the diagnostic port to bypass this problem

 

I put an aftermarket autometer trans temp gauge in my truck. I put a fitting inline with the trans cooler lines that would accept the sending unit. That was the easiest solution for me.

For the record I have bypassed the stock in-radiator trans cooler and just run a big plate cooler in front of the radiator. But the gauge install method I used would work on a stock setup.

In my 2001 Tacoma DC sr5 3.4 auto I use a cheap android phone, bluetooth obd2 adapter, and torque app. It has trans temp as a default choice. Monitor away. Also see STFT, LTFT, check and clear codes, monitor IATs, timing advance, etc etc.

 

I use this as well. Only downside is it drains the phone battery something fierce even plugged in, but that might just be my phone. I use it to monitor my numbers occasionally to make sure everything is cool

 

I must have missed something, I've got Torque and an obdII as well, and it doesn't have trans temp. Same as yours but a 2004. My 2017 4Runner doesn't have it either.

I'll have to go back home and double check that...

 

Go to 'Real Time' options on the home screen, then press the settings button on the next screen. Then press 'add gauge' and scroll through the options till you get to trans temp, they should be in alphabetical order.

I've seen it there but I don't use it since it only monitors auto trans temp, but it looks like it had the option there.

 

I use a scangauge to monitor trans fluid temps. Definitely worth it.

 

Yeah, there are a LOT of options in that list. That's basically everything the obd2 can track, but it depends on what the vehicle sends to it. IIRC, the trans temp was greyed out so not available to record... I'll double check though.

 

ah yeah mine was greyed out and I figured it was because I was a manual trans, maybe it doesn't do it then...or maybe only certain model years/configurations

 

Yeah, I was bummed when even my 2017 4Runner didn't have trans temp. I wanted to monitor the temp as I was pulling my camper trailer with the new rig for the first time up to WA State and back, and wanted to know if I should get a trans cooler like I did for my Taco. Oh well, I might get a trans cooler anyway, but the 4Runner didn't have a problem and never noticed the floor getting hot like my Taco did (before a trans cooler).

 

so it can, or it can't monitor trans temps? SGII can, but Torque can't?

I'm not familiar with the scan gauge. But from spending 10 seconds on the links provided, it can with some tweaking.

As for Torque, it CAN read atf temp (it's on the list of possible inputs), but is limited by what the obdII reader sends to it, which at least on my 2004 Doublecab 4x4, it does not.

$20 from amazon). Since the Scangauge cost like 8x as much, I'm not willing to spend the extra cash just for trany temps.

 

Kind of off-topic but does that OBDII reader cause your ABS light to blink if you have it plugged in when you start your truck? I have the FoSeal one (cost about the same on Amazon) and if I plug it in before starting my truck, the ABS light will flash at me until I turn off the truck and unplug the reader. Have to start it first then plug it in to avoid it. It's annoying but not a big deal, just curious if it's common with other readers...

 

I just leave it plugging in all the time, and I've never seen that before.

 

Thats one of my concerns that the ABS lite will flash which indicates a malfunction of the ABS system

I can't remember which scan gauge company or mfg but it mentions having to De pin port #6 and #14 on your diagnostic port . this will stop the ABS malfunction but I'm not into hacking up my wiring to just have the ability to use a scan gauge

 

yeah it's annoying but as long as I start the truck first everything is fine, but it's easy to forget that it's still plugged in sometimes...the ABS light will let you know real quick though. If it were something I wanted running all the time I'd be more annoyed with it, but I only plug it in every so often to make sure things are running smoothly. Eventually I'd like to upgrade to a Scangauge that I can run full time without worrying about that though
