Beeping alarm, while in 4 low during Tacoma test drive! Is this normal? How long does it last? Can it be stopped? I'm brand new to late model
    Toyota 4X4s! Thanks!

Beeping means you did it wrong...

Must be in N and traveling less then 5mph to engage into 4L

But you can shift on the fly into 4H at any speed up to 65mph

Truck was an automatic. I had stopped, put trans. into neutral,turned/pushed knob into 4L. Thats when the dang beeping started! Thanks!

Yea but, just because the switch is in a position doesn't mean the low 4 is engaged. That was your issue. You had a disagree between the switch postion and the actual drive train configuration.

Just had that issue when I took the truck on a little offroad. Turn on, off a few times. For me it worked when I actually put the truck in gear and started rolling at about 1mph... then it locked in (same prob when trying to disengage) eventually it locks / unlocks. But mine is manual trans - so may be a little different.

If you follow the instructions exactly as they appear on the sun visor, it will work. You should already be in H4... since L4 if for more extreme hill climbing, mud crossing etc. I suggest going into H4 as soon as you are off the pavement (you are suggested to use 4WD once a month for 10 miles by Toyota anyway). When you come to a place you need maximum power or crawling ability... if automatic: stop and put automatic tranny into N Neutral (not P Park)... rotate and depress dial into L4... put tranny into D Drive or a lower gear... (2009+ Off Road I also recommend pressing the A-TRAC button to have max. traction and no traction loss to slipping tires).

Sometimes my truck gets stuck in 4lo or4Hi depending if I'm on a hill. All I have to do is reverse and it usually releases the pressure on the axel and it disengages... And the annoying beeping stops.

Leave it in 4WD until you are ready to get off the dirt. As for getting out of low range... in all three of my Tacomas, the only issue was if I forget to put the tranny in neutral (N) before turning the dial/ pulling the shifter out of L4. Beeping should only be going on if you forget to be in NEUTRAL.
