If I purchase an axle containing a diff locker can I remove the diff locker and add it to my 1999 2WD Tacoma?

I don't know much about this but, I could do it I'm sure...I just don't know if you can add a diff to an axle that doesn't have one.

It would be no different than swapping any other 3rd member or adding a locker to your existing diff.

It can be done but there is some ginding and welding that has to be done to the axle housing.

No it cannot. This is incorrect information.

This is possible if you are using a 4runner axle, but not the tacoma "8.4". To put an elocker 3rd into a "8.4" housing, you would have to completely redo the mounting flange.

quoted from the link posted above:
"These locking diffs can be retrofitted into 8" diff axles if the axle housing is modified (see this article for more info). It cannot be easily retrofitted into a T100/Tundra or open-diff Tacoma style axle housing because the mounting bolt pattern is smaller. It "could" be done by an axle builder by doing major work to the mounting flange, but that is not really a practical option."

I've seen it done as stated in the link posted above numerous times.

So...can i buy a diff lock made to swap out with my axle? Are there any recommended brands that are good and fit my '99 2WD Tacoma PreRunner?

So... if you don't want to stick with an oem e locker then you've got options. You've got an 8.4" rearend for reference. Truetrac and lockright are two full time units. ARB and Harrop make more expensive units that you can turn on and off. Sky's the limit.

Check out East Coast Gear Supply and they can install any of those into a bolt up new third member (differential) for you.

Just google "Tacoma Powertrax" and a lot of threads will come up from installation to effects on driving in different situations!
