I'm creating this thread as an information thread because through much research, I have found an E-Locker for the front of our trucks. The 97-05 Hilux uses the same front differential as our 1st gen Tacoma, and a company called Harrop has partnered with Eaton to create a popular E-Locker used primarily in Austrailia. I'm currently having one installed by ECGS for my 1999 Tacoma.

My reasoning is I like simplicity, and there is less parts with this over an ARB. I'm also wary of sending air pressure to my differential, especially since I have an ADD diff.

For info on the locker and company, visit here - https://www.harrop.com.au/shop/4x4-performance

I ordered my locker through here - http://www.yotalockers.com/

For the 2nd Gen thread of this locker - https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/front-ifs-diff-locker.248258/page-22#post-12702265

Update: Harrop has now designed the same elocker for the rear 8.4" differential for our trucks.

There is no factory front locker for Tacomas. It should fit in the clamshell fine, as it is the same diff for the Hilux and Tacoma. There may be some light grinding needed inside the diff to clear the electromagnet. I'll know more when ECGS gets to assembling my clamshell.

Pricing for me was 1375 bucks, but he did give me a discount. Original price was 1575. These come with a wiring harness and switch.

I'll sub for the result. I like the idea, but the rear diff lock always acts up when I need/want it. Lets hope the front will be a little more reliable than the stock rear e locker.

The stock elocker uses an actuator. This is different, and uses an electro-magnet. It's supposed to be instant on/off. The guy who installed this on his 2nd Gen has had no issues and no complaints so far.

I've spoken with the guy who did it to the 2nd gen. He's had it in since 2013 and loves it. He was a test dummy with it and ECGS, and he paid a little more then he should have for some R/D with ECGS, but he's happy.

ECGS quoted me $1000 to build the clamshell, with a $300 core charge I'll get back when I send them my old clamshell. That $700 includes new 4.56 gears, bearings, seals, etc. So $700 for install isn't bad at all, especially if they need to do some trim work inside.

Got the call from ECGS today. It done and enroute to me. It only took them 2 days, so I'm guessing it was a pretty straightforward install.

I also asked about an e-locker for the 8.4". Apparently, the Hilux uses an 8.4 with a 10 bolt ring gear, vs our 12 bolt ring gear. So currently, there is nothing for the rear. But, I was told that a Tacoma 3rd is enroute to Harrop so they work start designing one for our 8.4".
