Front diff was pretty dirty at just over 10k with mild off-roading.

Smear is off the plug, towel was dipped in drain pan.

I just replaced my rear shocks with 5100's. How do you set the torque for the nut on the top of the rear shock? In order to tighten it, an allen wrench must be used to hold the threaded spindle from turning, so you can't use a socket on the torque wrench.

If you have an Off-Road you'll need a 12mm socket and extension to remove the skid plate #2 in order to access the drain/fill plugs.

How many of you do your own maintenance despite having toyota care? i just did my own 10k oil change(first one was at 600) only because when dealer did 5k service they scratched up quite a but of plastics on the inside, not even sure how that happens.
I don't mind doing schedules service myself, I've done much more complex servicing on other cars so this is easy in comparison, the only downside would be not having "official" dealer maintenance done, which would look good if i should happen to sell the truck at some point.
Whats the consensus here for those doing stuff themselves, collect receipts and snap a few pics along the way?

I do my own and keep my own records. As official as theirs. Plus I know its done correctly and I'm not waiting 6 years in a waiting room.

I do my own service on all my vehicles. Toyota Care goes in the trash. It only really adds up to two glorified oil changes. DIY and know it's done right. I look forward to the services and keeping and checking things over.

I do all my own maintenance and you all no why (it's done right). I have an appointment on Monday for the rear diff. recall I really hate to take it in but in case something goes wrong at least they can't say I didn't bring it in. I just don't trust the dealer. I have 28000 miles on my 2016 SR5 and the only problem I have had is the messed up transmission which the revision did help.

Amazing Post - thanks you, you saved me a lot of research. Just switched over from a Rubicon to a Tacoma, lots of new things to learn.
I found this: https://www.motivxtools.com/pages/searchresults_toyota_mx2301_mx2320_mx2341 if it helps anyone - filter wrench and drain / fill kit.
    And also this: https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/oem...069&Filter=()&Location=cylinder-block,,12101B
The drain plug gasket, don't quite know if I'll need it yet. Ordered an Amsoil filter and not sure if it comes with a plug gasket like the oem filter does.

I perform oil changes on 6 different vehicles...so I make a cheat sheet for each one. Here is the one for my 2017 TRD Sport LB. First oil change at 2,400 miles...noticed a lot of metal flakes in the bottom of the oil filter canister.
Replacing engine oil and filter, 2016-2017 Tacoma V6:
First time for this vehicle took me 1.5 hours next time it should take 0.5 hours. Bottom photo is the install of my new SnugTop Sport Hi-Liner Topper. Have Fun!

Im interested in rotating my tires myself. Is it safe to put the Jack under the axle tubes with bending them? Would prefer not take it to the dealer.

What do you keep records in? Do you just have a small log book or do you use the maintenance log that came with the truck? I have always done my own maintenance but I want to get better at logging it.

You can use the Maintenance guide included with your owners manual book. It Has a check list along recommended interval periods and a spot to record mileage, dealership, date and notes.

Toyota maintenance guide, kept in a 2 hole binder. I put my receipts for all parts in the same binder in my glove box.

No dealer maintenance for me, they just simply don't care enough to do it exactly right every single time. Too many personal examples of overtorqued bolts, broken clips, scratched wheels, etc. Not worried about resale. You get a Toyota to keep it forever anyway, right? But even if I did care about the resale, I honestly think that the ability to say that I did all the maintenance myself and could explain the ins and outs of it would mean just as much in resale.
