So I went from active to reserves and typical military awesomeness the NOSC always jacks up lodging for drill weekends.

Anyone in San Diego know of areas on base where one can get away with propping up a roof top tent?

Can't speak for your location, but most installations have a campground somewhere on the facility. Check with the MWR office, or what passes for such in the Navy.

Its an on-the-fly thing, camp site reservations often need to be made in advance. Just wanting a spot I can sleep at for free when they drop the ball on berthing (had to sleep in my passenger seat one night, refuse to spend almost $200 to get a few hours sleep that won't be reimbursed). The Navy lodge on north island has a nice parking lot, but I can just imagine getting hounded by the base MAs

I don't quite understand your units inability to provide rooms to everyone on a drill weekend. I was AF, not Navy, but on our drill weekends if the base lodging was full, we put people downtown at GOV expense. To get that, there is the requirement that you live 50 miles from the installation. So long as you're beyond that I believe they are required to give you housing at GOV expense. If you lived less than 50 miles you were expected to commute from home.

Maybe hence the 'good life' banter other branches throw at the Air Force. I know what they are obligated to provide, but it doesn't always work out- recent issues was a change in the NOSCs form and turn-in process, then just strait loosing it, oh and one time putting the wrong name. If you dare say something that would imply they use some system of common sense/retroactive charging to the unit etc, I dare say you were never prior service haha.

My fix for that; is a letter or email to your favorite Senator or Congressman. About how your commitment to serve your country is costing you money, due to NOSCs inability to properly manage their lodging facilities.

Congressman and Senators take those letters and emails, and in turn pose the question to the leadership at NOSC, of why they cannot properly manage their lodging facilities? The leadership is required to reply to congressional inquiries. If there is a valid reason they will find it, if there is not, they will correct it.

I had to send one such email to my Senator when I came back from Afganistan. I'm sure the leadership wasn't happy about receiving the inquiry, but it did rectify the situation.

To me the bottom line is, service alone requires enough sacrofices. Such that service members should not have to spend their own money too serve!

Bump, so found this by coincidence, the annex base in San Diego has a parking lot where u can bring trailers, rigs to camp. There wasn't a reservation, looked first come first serve.
