I don't see a big issue. Race cars do it all the time, and big trucks do it if they can. I used to pump gas, and there are far more hazardous activities than that. I've also seen some real idiots at the self serve too, so I can understand the apprehension.

Semis use diesel which is much less explosive than gasoline, and race cars wear protective gear and generally follow establish safety procedures like proper bonding prior to fuel flow, no smokers at the stall next to them, no silk dresses sliding in and out of the cab while fumes are generating, etc.
