    Howdy folks,

I'm currently in the process of doing my research on a 3rd Gen Tacoma, but am having trouble deciding between the DC 4x4 SR5 and a TRD Sport. I've been to a few dealerships to talk to the sales folks and find out more about the differences, but they don't seem to know what they're talking about. I have yet to talk to a dealer that knows anything about the differences between their trucks, or even the features they have.

One sales guy was trying to convince me that the scoop was there because the trd sport runs more like a sports car. (uh, what?). Another said that there is some kind of filter under the scoop that opens up and blows air to the engine (while we had the hood open and were physically staring at the closed scoop from underneath!), and that the only difference between the SR5 and TRD sport is the shocks. $5k for upgraded shocks? come on. Don't even get me started on the stupid stories they tell when you ask about crawl control...

Anyone from NorCal, i'd love to hear your experiences with the local dealerships and if you can recommend a sales guy that actually knows a thing or 2 about trucks. I don't want to hand my money over to someone who doesn't know what he's talking about.

That aside, I hope to take ownership of a SR5. I won't be doing much regular trail blazing; just using it for a daily commuter and for hauling stuff around. Thanks!

I bought mine from Miata Toyota here in Sacramento. Got a great deal and the dealership had a lot of knowledge about the truck.

I went to Magnussen and had a great experience, but couldn't get a great price - I ended up buying from a used dealer that wasn't Toyota. I now go to Magnussen for service and like it a lot. I found a dealer that has a big online presence that said they would do $500 over invoice - and you can look up invoice pricing here on Tacoma World. If I were buying new I would probably go with that dealer and use Magnussen for servicing if they are convenient. If you want any more info, reply to the thread, and I'll go see if I can dig up that dealer.

Thanks for the tips guys! I'm seeing that it's getting harder and harder to find a MGM TRD Sport 4x4 SB. I wonder if i should just hold off for 2018? I'm also seeing some 2017s coming up in the "used car" search results. Perhaps i should steer clear of those ones?

Magnussen Palo Alto? Wife bought her Highlander there certified preowned. They tried to pull a fast one and revoke the toyota warranty the day after and have us sign for an aftermarket warranty. Because of the aftermarket wheels that were on it at purchase. Of course I told em to fuck off. Not a huge fan of em...

The service / parts department at Magnussen (Palo Alto) seems to know what they're doing, but the two times I was there looking to buy something, I wasn't impressed by their sales reps. (Low pressure, but low knowledge and engagement too.)

I bought the truck from Toyota101 (Redwood City) in a thoroughly average sales experience, but subsequently found their service and parts departments to be terrible. (Eg, they invented a bunch of drama about ordering and swapping the leather boot on the shifter, with comically bad lies from the service rep, weeks of lead time and 3 days in the shop for a 5 minute job.)

You don't think the Nav and other small things aren't worth it?

I'm in the same position and so far I gotten really good offers from Toyota Vacaville and Freeman Toyota. They are offering a little over $3k off MSRP for the TRD off sport 4x2.

Thanks for all the feedback guys. I ended up picking up a MGM 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 SB from Rod (the internet manager) over at Piercey Toyota in Milpitas. I highly recommend him, if you are in the market for a toyota. He actually knows what he's talking about, unlike those stupid sales guys on the lot that keep trying to convince you that the hood scoop is functional, and that the ONLY difference between models is the suspension, and are on their phone half the time you're trying to learn about the car.

Picked up my Taco from Folsom Lake Toyota yesterday. DCSB TRD Sport 4x4 6MT with P&T and some other goodies for $33,882 plus TTL. Dealt with Ricky. Good experience and highly recommended. A little curious about the service department sucking though? They are my closest service shop.
