The DPF filter will clog up from idling. My big trucks won't idle for more than a few minutes unless you use cruise control to raise RPMs (which might work on this motor too). Still not a good idea unless you do a lot of highway miles to give the DPF a chance to clean itself or run regen cycles.

Ah, so the motor shuts down because it thinks it is out of DPF. That makes sense.

There is DEF which is fluid. Mostly made out of urine and water. There is also the DPF which stands for "Diesel Particulate Filter". It grabs all the soot and stores it. When it gets loaded up it burns it off by getting really hot. If you do a lot of highway miles it does this on its own. If you don't do highway miles you have to press a button to make it do it. Idling fills up the DPF real quick.

It's all fairly new technology. Just learned about it myself recently when we got a new box truck. I think it's great that emissions have went down and MPG has went up. The added MPG easily offsets the cost of DEF. It's still a pain in the ass to deal with it all though.

Bigger pain in the ass when something goes wrong, even when within warranty. Many dealer techs can't diagnose it properly because it is still relatively uncommon. The DEF adds a whole system with similar complexity as the fuel system, which on GMs can be finicky because of the poor quality of the Delphi designs.

Yeah the DEF matter was a consideration for me as well. Just another level of complexity. I often regret selling my old 98.5 Dodge 2500 with the 24v Cummins. That motor was outstanding. I had 200K on it, it was no wheres near tired, still on original injectors (and replacements are CHEAP).. They are still in high demand..

But I got really tired of replacing the Dodge out of that truck. F*ck I was rebuilding the front end every 30,000 miles, lol.

I hope to get the best of both world by putting a 12V in my 1990 F350. Heard its a pretty popular swap. Head gasket is on the way out of the IDI.

Luckily we lease our big trucks so it's not really our problem.

I'd go 12v or 24v. Both are outstanding engines.

I'm no mechanic. No computers on a swap sounds nice.
