Best shocks

I'm about to put new shocks on my taco as the current ones are rather shot. I was looking at either the Bilsteins that came with the trd package originally or the Rancho RS5000 series. What do you all recommend?

 

I don't think you can go wrong with the Bilsteins.

 

I bought my '08 Tacoma TRD 4 x 4 last month. Prior to that I owned a Dodge Dakota 4 x 4 for 7 yrs. I replaced the factory shocks on that truck Dec. '06 with Rancho 5000 shocks. They worked fine for me. I'm not familiar with Bilstein shocks. I'm sure either would be fine. Both have good reputations so maybe cost would be the factor to consider.

Bilsteins, you cant top the valving on them.

 

What is "top the valving" regarding shocks. Don't know a lot about them so I could use some education. Bilstein shocks seems to be the way to go from what I've read. Thanks for any "forum" education.

 

I was saying that you cant get much better than the bilsteins. The valving is how the shocks are internally setup.

 

Looks like I'm going with the Bilsteins then. The best price I found was on eshocks.com, a full set is about $280 for 1st gens.

 

When I replaced the ones on my '99 with new HD yellow Bilsteins from Performance Products they were approx. twice the size of the TRD fleet type Toyota issue Bilsteins. The ride was greatly improved with the replacements . I just got an '08 and had the TSB rear leafs done and I'm already putting the 5100's on. I have just over 1000 miles on the TRD Toyota fleet yellow Bilsteins. This swap is also to level the truck somewhat but I'm expecting a lot better ride as well. I had Rancho 5000's on my '89 with a 2" lift all around and they were ok but I feel the Bilsteins are far better. Their wins in off road racing speaks for itself.

Bilstein 5100 at least, very inexpensive and an awesome shock for the Tacoma!

Fox, and King are the tops... but $$$

Avoid that other brand... way too many horror stories from people I know personally who had them.

 

What are the best shocks if money doesn't matter? I don't mind paying more. I want my truck to be figuratively 'bullet proof'

 

Resurrecting this thread. I just bought a 2001 2.4L 5-speed 2WD extended cab and the shocks are shot. If you push any corner with your hand, the whole truck bounces around like a bobble head. It has 211K miles and I'm sure the shocks are original.

What is the current day recommendation for a good set of 4 shocks?

They are a vendor here, and will give you a TW member discount on a full set of 5100's. When I got mine they were $299 for all 4 (that was 6 years ago for me, but they still do discounts as I just got a set of Kings and UCAs a few weeks ago).

The catch is yo need to install the fronts yourself which means you need to rent a spring compressor from Autozone (free). Search around here for instructions, it's pretty easy.

 

Bilstein 5100s are a good budget set.
