You mean a customer can be accommodating and come to a reasonable compromise/agreement, too?! What world do you live in?!

I have never dealt with a third member type axle before, but wouldn't the gasket thickness have to be very uniform in thickness to properly line up with the axle shafts? In other words, so the centerline of the differential carrier, thus the ring gear, matches the center line of the axle shafts. This is why I would be concerned with RTV for this application.

Works a daily, owns a farm and is too big for a corolla? o_O:notsure:

The repair does not seem like a Toyota Recall fix, YET seems like a suitable fix to get OP back into the truck.

This is an interesting thought. If this is the case though, even altering the torque of the screws (as in the recall) would adjust fitment/tolerances inside the diff, however slightly.

I call it negligible unless the gasket is of reasonable thickness.

I think what they did to OP's truck was leave the gasket installed, and add RTV as a "belt and suspenders" to keep oil leaks from happening.

This is an excellent question. I am wondering the same as well.

I definitely would change the relationship between the axles and how they splines mate to the third member. I don't know if it actually creates a problem though. They did get the axels to go back in right? ;)

This is not proper protocol for the recall repair kit, the proper parts were not installed but the rtv will fix the leak. Go back and tell them rtv isn't a paper oem gasket, and take the rental car for a hell ride.

Alignment of the axles from changing the type of gasket will not be an issue. The rear ends are not precision made and have a tolerance range for alignment. While the misalignment may be small, you will find it on most banjo style rear ends.
The alignment is most easily seen when rebuilding/narrowing a rear end with a proper jig. My rear end for my car had a .290" misalignment on one side and a .177" misalignment on the other.

The OEM gasket is paper, it is thin. RTV will have some thickness, but not much, it is also thin. You are talking about a relationship between the splined side of the axle shafts which sit in the carrier, and the bearing side which is approximately 30" away at the ends of the axle housing, a housing that is made from stamped steel. Trust me the tolerances are not tight enough to make the difference in gasket thickness matter in this scenario.

RTV as a third member gasket is a very common method, and many would argue is superior to the OEM paper gasket and less likely to leak.

Update. The service writer never called but case manager from Toyota did. I explained what had transpired over last few days as well as sent him the same pictures I sent service writer that are also posted here. He stated this was not within the recall specs for a repair. He is contacting the service manager to get to the bottom of this. He agreed if I had failure in the future, the dealer would claim this is not their repair as I suspected. He also stated RTV was not to be used for whatever reason. I let him know that service writer told me this morning this was permanent fix and acceptable as the tech had already done 4 or 5 of these. Toyota Case representative was flabbergasted. I was told he would touch base with me within two days. I have already rented myself transportation out of my pocket because I needed a truck while old blue is out to pasture. Thanks for all your replies and help.

I hate paper gaskets with a passion. When I put the ARB in my rear axle I used RTV.

That was a point the case manager made this evening. He said paperwork from dealer shows repair done by Toyota specs even thought they have coated it with RTV and now Toyota has the pictures to prove it. He was shocked.

My father is a long time service and parts director for Toyota, and now Lexus. Going on 30+ years. I know how they play the game.

Glad I could help and glad it’s getting fixed. Knew this is how you would end up from the beginning. Kicking and screaming rarely goes unanswered.

Next tip: line up your rental or get ready to argue again. They’re gonna have your truck again for some time to fix the botch from the first time.

    Can you spell Permatex ?
Or even ever used it ? Or ever rebuilt anything ?
I have done many diffs and always use Permatex for diffs. Put 100K+ on them with zero leaks. They make it specifically for that. Research it.
    81182 Permatex.
What they used is different, but it will work.
