Kind of looks like the 979 is a little shorter than the 980. My understanding is that the 980 is custom made for tacomas with the recall leaves and 14 -17 up tacomas. Should get in touch with hellwig..They got back with me in a day.

These are the 980s...do you have the long end forward or back?
They are not open on weekends, neithere are any of the spring companies that carry them.
If it doesn't matter where the helper u-bolt straps sit, then I should be okay. I am going to have to cut off my exhaust though...the rear straps will sit right where the pipes already contact the leafs at flex.

The long end should go towards the front. I'm not sure why your leafs make contact with your exhaust at flex because they should not. Unless that has something to do with recall springs on an older truck. Is your exhaust bent a little from where it should be?

I got long side facing front. For some reason seems like helpers are a little shorter the way the picture looks. I had to mount rear clamp in front of spring clip to fit better . Also front bolts had to mount pass.side ways like drivers side because of were 3rd leaf ended and were spring retainer is . My tsb sorings came off a 2013 I believe

I'd call Monday and talk to Kevin at Hellwig. He may know more or know a solution.

I have a flowaster dual tailpipe setup.
It's never really fit perfect back there but rarely makes contact with the old leafs. With the new leaf pack, the pipes are resting against them jacked up at frame/tires still on the ground. (Exactly at the point that the rear u bolts will go.)
So I have them in correctly, guess ill try to connect everything. Will probably cut the pipes off in front of the axle and put turndown on it.

Yes. This is exactly the answer I was looking for. The pictures and instructions I received were not accurate to my springs and it threw me off.
    Ty sir.

I just saw your pics. The rear ubolts aren't fully seated in the spring cup. Mine were like that. I called Hellwig and they made an updated hardware kit for the Tacoma. You might call and ask. Here is a pic of the newest rear ubolts. Yours should look like this....just one bend at the top; not two. The new ones won't run against the spring keeper.

Just finished installing them. Mine are different than yours though. Mine are a larger u bolt (larger nut) and much longer. Yours are much cleaner looking though. Hellwig has some good customer service.

Got my response from Helwig...per them the 550 springs that I have are not compatible with the new recall version leaf packs, only the 980 springs work now.

Thread is a bit old but figured it's worth a try. Those with the Hellwig 980. Are you still happy? Im looking to install these on my 09 4x4 TRD in prep for towing a travel trailer. Ill be adding abt 400# tongue weight and by the time I'm done with all the stuff we travel with will be close to max payload. I'll be using an Anderson WD Hitch but figure the springs add a bit more insurance.

I have a set of the old split Hellwig helper springs on my 06 AC TRD OR with the new recall springs from Toyota when I load up my old school heavy camper. Last Fall I did a 7500 plus mile round trip with this rig and had zero problems. I can't see why any helper spring set would not help your case.

I love mine on my 2016 trd offroad. Supports weight and doesn’t bottom out on big bumps like stock springs. I had to make a few alternating and cut corners of springs to keep them from hitting from under full compression.

Your review is exactly my experience with the Sumosprings and a camper shell. Nice write up.

I know this is a very old thread, but A Are you guys still happy with the 980's and B when installing these do you jack up the truck at the frame to do the install? I'm considering buying a set to install on my truck. Thanks.
